Carol Perkins: Designers don't understand ample women

Designers just don't get it she says, but if they did, she says, I can hear Joan Rivers on the runway now, 'So and so is wearing a Carol Perkins design; isn't that a lovely dress- for her size!' - CAROL PERKINS
Next earlier Carol Perkins column: Mama Said

By Carol Perkins

Nothing looks good on a fat woman. Isn't that what designers think? Isn't that why they don't focus on clothing for heavy women? Liz Claiborne had her Elizabeth line, but she produced frumpy flocks. Ralph Lauren has his Lauren woman, but the prices are so high the average working woman can't buy them. A 3x blouse runs around $95. The same blouse for other women would be about $75. Does it take that much more material? Most people don't make that kind of money, so they are not even tempted by those designers.

Charity Navigator: Thanks for interest in responsible giving

Thanks to everyone who has expressed interest in Responsible Giving. The idea for posting the link to Charity Navigator came from George Kobenschlag, who told us he found the site to be a great resource for qualifying a charity. He uses other criteria, as well, but finds this site easy to use, and an worthwhile check before handing over a donation.

The idea of the responsibility for doing the arithmetic before giving was reinforced by a conversation with another of Columbia's most charitable individuals, who said that he researches charities, though not necessarily through Charity Navigator, and has dramatically altered his giving. He said his tests were two: 1) Does all of the money go to the charity's program? and 2) Does this Charity's work begin at home. He checks whether the Charity's work directly helps the needs of his hometown.

For those who haven't visited Charity Navigator, CM would like to suggest this sampler from the sites Top 10 Lists: 10 Charities Overpaying their For-Profit Fundraisers. Your comments are welcome. -ED WAGGENER
