Poetry by Robert Stone: No second chance, a sonnet

No second chance
- a sonnet for the birthday of Clara Elizabeth Ellis
Another year a year ago arrived
and now complete is stepping fast aside.
While better added up and worse deprived,
sound seasons hope embraced and fear denied.

Tomorrows now are faded yesterdays
with promises fulfilled and unfulfilled.
A lot of littles often made a maze
within which jumbled choices were unwilled.

How easy said, not now but sometime soon,
and later understand no second chance
will be before that hastening high noon
when opportunity tolls final dance.

Attention only to the seeming huge
is swelling pride seduced by subterfuge.

- Robert Stone, 11 February 2013

Superintendent Treece explains reason for rehab

It was elective knee surgery - and he'll be out kicking up his heels very soon

Darrell Treece writes:
Ed, I had bilateral knee replacement on January 29. It was something that I have needed to do for several years. But since it was not an emergency, I would not take the time off from work.

I came to Summit Manor to rehab starting February 4 and am making slow but steady progress. The reason I decided to post this on Columbia Magazine was a conversation I heard outside my door last night. Someone saw my name on the wall and remarked to a friend, "He used to be with the school system. He must have had a heart attack or something!"

I am alive and well! Thanks for the many prayers that have been offered for my recovery and thanks to Summitt Manor for the excellent care and rehab I am receiving here.

I should be out "kicking up my heels" very soon. - Darrell Treece
Thanks, Mr. Treece for clarifying the situation, and thanks for all you did for the Adair County school infrastructure as superintendent. Best wishes for a speedy recovery. - EW

Ann asks citizens to help a fellow Adair Countian at time of need

From County Judge Executive Ann Melton
I am writing on behalf of Martha Lacy of Independence Ridge Road in the lower end of Adair County. I was recently contacted by Ms Phyllis Sparks about Martha's condition, in her quest to get help with improvements to Ms Lacy's porch and steps. Recently, she underwent a double mastectomy, and was diagnosed with cancer. Martha will have to undergo numerous treatments for the cancer. Martha's porch and steps are in a very sad state of repair. A contractor estimated that it would take approximately $600 to repair the porch and steps.

I hope you will join me in my mission to raise $600 for the improvements of Martha' porch and steps. Donations can be made at Adair County Judge Executive Ann Melton's Office, 424 Public Square, Ste 1, Columbia KY 42728. Questions can be directed to my office: 270-384-4703 or Mrs. Phyllis Sparks: 270-634-2073.

I thank you in advance for considering our request for donations toward Ms Martha Lacy's porch and steps. Together, we can make her live much easier and safer.
Ann Melton, Judge Executive

Comment: Vote leaders out of office who don't lead

The folks who we put our trust in to look out for our interests and welfare too often subrogate their duties and responsibilities to an ever increasing cadre of bureaucrats and appointed factotums with little direct electoral accountability
Comments re article 57559 Vote leaders who dont lead out of office

Personal opinion

Here I go with the "unfortunately" again.

We've learned (or should have learned) by now that the Elected Leaders have very little to say about the matters that affect our lives the most. It's unclear if this is a result of happenstance, ennui, laziness or malfeasance. But it's clear that it exists at all levels of Government.

Cafe on the Square was a beacon on the Square

Writer calls it 'A Class Act.' Sounds hope that the closing will only be for a short time

By Doug Peterson

It is so very sad about the Cafe.

It was not only a beacon on the Square, it was a class act within the community. Their hospitality was wonderful and the menu and food preparation was most excellent.

The Cafe On The Square was not only a gathering place for the students at Lindsey Wilson and a regular lunch spot for the workers in the area, but it was also a place that visitors to our community (including those from out of state) would come to. It represents the best of Kentucky hospitality and quality dining in a relaxed atmosphere that made everyone feel at home.

With the closing (hopefully only for a short time), we have not only lost some dear friends, we have lost a member of our family.

Asks us not to forget that truckers are really needed

Comments re article 57516 Movie Argo has Campbellsville KY connection

Georgia Judd writes:
With all the comments about the Big Trucks, we all need to think and realize what would we really do without them. We all like them to make the deliveries to the places we need them to, so let's all be thankful. - Georgia Judd
Thanks, Georgia Judd: But of course that goes without saying and was not an issue whatsoever in the discussion. The trucking industry is vital. The discussion was about making the roads safer for truckers and other vehicles. And respect for truckers? That, too is a given - or at least it should be. Truckers work is important, stressful, and perilous, Being a trucker, though not as dangerous as being a farmer, a roofer, a pilot, a sanitation worker, or a logger, is more dangerous than being a policeman, a fireman, a prison or jail guard, (or internet editor, according to us) at least according to a CNN report at America's Ten most dangerous jobs - EW

Cafe on the Square owners announce it is closing

Holds out possibility of re-opening in the future

Dear Cafe Family,

It is with hope, and great sadness, that we must announce the closing of the Cafe. On Monday, February 11, when you stop coming in, we will close our doors for the immediate future.

For the past three years you have been such a BLESSING in our lives! We only hope that we were able to bless you in much the same way?!?

As many of you know, for three years we have been operating Cafe on the Square by faith. And God has been faithful, for three years He provided for the Cafe and each of our families. But, it is now apparent that God has either fulfilled His purpose or He is about to take this to a whole new level.

It is with broken hearts, many tears, and lots of prayers that we must close the doors. We are NOT certain that God has finished His work with the cafe, but we know that without help, we cannot continue developing the cafe into what it can be.

It is our prayer that this closure is just temporary, and that God will use this time to show Himself mightily, bringing His people together to continue the work that He began nearly four years ago. As has been the case since June 28, 2009, we leave the cafe in His capable hands.

Please join us in concentrated prayer that God's will be done.

Your Extended Family,
David & CJ, Ned & Bridgette, Kellis & Cali

Here there is no Gentile or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and in all. - Colossians 3:11

  1. The Winfrey House Hotel & an Epidemic, 1873 in Columbia, KY about a horrible time in Adair County history where people of the day documented what was happening so those who came after could benefit from the heart breaking details.
  2. LWC Community kicks off 5-year writing program. The hopeful story about new emphasis on writing at Lindsey Wilson College
