Poetry by Robert Stone: To better try, a sonnet

To better try
- a sonnet reflecting on "A Song For Coretta"
A time for everything, a time to die.
How must we left behind remember those
examples calling us to better try
by love - hate, ignorance, and pride expose.

A time for dancing and a time to weep.
How must we going on recall the ways
in which the struggle though the cost was steep
by faith insisted worth with soul ablaze.

A time to keep, a time to throw away.
How must we daily now address our faults
disguised as goodness habit would replay
by hope diminishing to constant halts.

Eternity resides in human hearts
before and after breath arrives, departs.

- Robert Stone, 30 September 2012

Birthdays: A mini-daily newspaper in itself

If we counted correctly there are 34 entries in today's CM Birthdays, Anniversaries, and In Memory Birthdays. The feature is one of the most read sections of CM, something of a mini Daily Newspaper in and of itself.

We can still add entries, in case we've missed. Though this is an incredibly busy day at the magazine - Sundays with CM are always big - and this is the end of the month with a lot of cutering and tinkering to do, we'll do our best to add any birthdays not now listed.

And remember, tonight at midnight, the set of birthdays will be for October-November, and we'll be taking entries for those months, then. Today, we'll be posting only for September-October. Use any Contact/Submit button to submit. For these celebrations, it is simplest for us if each submission is sent as a separate email. This aids us in sending a confirmation email.

Currently all events are scheduled to recur each year, as posted, until we are notified otherwise. - ED WAGGENER, 270-250-2730. edwaggener@gmail.com

Adair County Football now 5-2 on the 2012 season

Coach Travis Gay's amazing Adair County Indian Football team hit a road bump on Friday night, when the perennially powerful Monroe County Falcons dampened spirits, briefly, with a 6-23 game at the home of the Indians, the Adair County Football Stadium, 623 Indian Drive, Columbia, KY, on Friday, September 28, 2012.

The Indians are now 5-2 on the season, after the spectacular 5-game winning streak was stopped. They are still overwhelming in total points scored vs. opponents: 245-130.

Carol Perkins: Special eligibles trips are all about Good Deals!

In this First of Two articles, our Metcalfe County and Beyond heroine tells of a New Orleans trip by 'elder' citizens, which began with two SUV's filled with members and stuff loaded on like the Clampetts

There were ten of us this year. Ten women each eligible for a senior discount coffee at McDonald's whether willing to admit it or not. Although the number changes from year to year, depending on each person's situation, the core group seldom varies. For the last 35 years, we ladies have managed to carve out a few days or an entire week for a vacation once a year whether to the beach, to the city, or a cruise. We leave behind husbands, kids, grandkids, jobs, and, hopefully, our worries. This year we took a cruise because one of the women found a really good deal. We are all about good deals!

In the depression days of the 1930's, towns large enough to have a business district had a dime store. A dime store, also called by a variety of similar names was a variety store and from the name, the prices were dependably affordable. In those days, dime stores came under the names Ben Franklin, Kresge, Woolworth, H. L. Green, Hested, Grants and many others. They were on the order of modern day Dollar General Stores but much classier. Quite often, they boasted a very popular lunch counter. They were found in the high dollar area of the business district of any town.

By now, gentle reader, you should know that my reading is, to put the best face on it, eclectic. Perhaps "haphazard" is a more accurate term.

A few days ago I picked up a once or twice read novel by Patricia Cornwell featuring her corpse-cutting medical examiner, Kay Scarpetta.
