Thoughts on the 13th Kentucky Cavalry: The Adair Co. regiment Members of the 13th Kentucky Cavalry came to Columbia, KY, to Camp Boyle, to muster in. "This is why Camp Boyle and the Thirteenth Kentucky Cavalry are such an important part of Adair County History. . . the 13th Kentucky Regiment is our regiment," Chris Bennett writes. And, while there are Wayside markers with some information about the encampment, the writer, who successfully initiated a fast completed fundraiser to erect a monument to the history of the B-58 'Hustler' bomber crash at McKinney, now calls for similar action to erect Kentucky Historical Markers to better commemorate Camp Boyle. Click on headline for all of this fascinating, must-read history plus photo(s) By Chris Bennett I first learned about the Thirteenth Kentucky Cavalry (Union) several years ago, when I was researching family history. I had listen to many stories told by my grandfather Loy on my mothers side about his family, so I knew quite a bit about the Loy's. When I would ask my father about his side of the family he would say, "I don't know." My grand-paw Bennett died when I was fourteen, so I never asked him about family history. It took me several years to put all the pieces together, but I finally did. Luckily all my family settled in the southern part of Adair County and they stayed there. This made my family history easy to trace. Article continues... click title or click here to read whole article. 2012-01-24 23:22:38 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Local History

Thirteenth Kentucky Cavalry By Paul Patton The article on the 13th. Ky. Cavalry by Chris Bennett was interesting and has prompted me to add a bit of family history of my own. My great, great grandfather, Rev. Robert F. Mills served as a chaplain in the 13th. Ky. From the Pellyton area of Adair County, he enlisted as a private but was later commissioned as chaplain by Governor Robinson. Specifically, he was chaplain of Company B and served with distinction throughout the existence of the 13th. Ky Cavalry. Also, enlisting in this company was my great grandfather, John H. Patton, a young man of 19 who traveled from Crossville, TN. to enlist in the Union Army and later married the chaplain's daughter Mary Jane. Sends correction on spelling of EUB pastor name BJ Hagy writes: Hello Pen,"...The Brethren apparently continued to meet there for severalmonths, however, as the March 12, 1919 edition stated that "Rev. I remember Harry, and his wife Harriet, and their three childrenfondly. The children's names are: Sue, Lolly, and Leland. I stillexchange emails with Leland from time to time. The Reverand Harry T. Todd's Cave: Judge Baker's comments; a visit to the cave, 1900 By JIM Todd's Cave: Judge Baker's comments; and a visit to the cave, 1900The following passages are from Judge Herschel Clay Baker's Sketches of Adair County, Sketch # 2, which appeared in the January 30, 1918 Adair County News. About two and a half miles from Columbia, on the road leading to Milltown, is "Todd's Cave," one of the natural curiosities of the county. The mouth of the cave, from which issues a bold, clear stream of water, is on the hill side, a short distance from Pettis Fork creek. It can be entered by walking erect beside the stream along the solid arch way of rock. About thirty steps from the entrance is an opening by which admission is gained to the main channel in the second story, which is probably twelve feet or more above the channel of the stream. Here is a large hall way, or avenue, which can be followed to the right or to the left. One way leads to the "Tanyard," the other to the "Meathouse," the two most noted objects in the cave. These are well worth seeing, and when seen, the suggestiveness of the names applied to them is apparent, for one has the appearance of a number of large hides hanging from the ceiling, and the other, of the shoulders and hams when in position for drying and smoking. A remarkable feature of the hides is, that when struck with a stick, each gives forth a different sound. Burying cables great for everyone but the Squirrels Rickie Williams writes: Concerning a comment you made in an article, I too think that the electric, phone and cable utility lines ought to be under ground wherever it is feasible to do so. Supposedly, there is going to be some major water line work done in the Jones-Wright area. There would be no better time for the various services to "work together" and bury the hatchet...I mean the lines. However, the squirrels in the neighborhood might become very upset about losing their "high-way" paths. - Rickie Williams 2012-01-24 06:21:21 | Comments | Printable version
History: Direction of Wind saved Courthouse from burning Confederate General Lyons carried box of matches with him and after he left Burkesville and Campbellsville, Cumberland and Taylor Counties were without courthouses. A wind and a favor to his hotel keeper saved the Adair County Courthouse from destruction by Confederates. Click on headline for complete story plus photo of old ledger page, unrelated to this story, but proves rebels were here By Tiffany Hadley Kessler Concerning Columbia/Adair County and Civil War - This is a most wonderful account of an event before the war ended from Judge H C Baker...recalled in the 1918 issue of the Adair News. We found this newspaper falling apart. This particular issue is not archived in the KY Virtual Library and was afraid the story would be lost forever. According to Judge Baker, "It is said the direction the wind was blowing saved the courthouse in Columbia." Adair County News, Wed. June 12, 1918 "Sketches of Adair County" ~ Historical and Biographical that will be of interest to all Readers of the News No. 19. By Judge H C Baker General Lyons was in command of the last body of Confederate troops that passed through this section of the state. He carried a box of matches with him, and after he had gone Taylor and Cumberland counties were without courthouses. It is said the direction the wind was blowing saved the courthouse in Columbia. He spent the night at the Winfrey Hotel, and the next morning, when he was about to set fire to it, the wind was blowing in the direction of the hotel building. Mrs. Winfrey told him that if he burned the courthouse her property would burn, and also other houses near it. As he did not desire to destroy private property, he listened to her entreaty not to burn it.
