Casey celebrated being 100 days smarter on the 100th Day of School for the 2011-2012 school year, staff members tried to look in to the future. Staff at CWC came dressed as they would imagine they would look when they are 100 years old. I must say we are going to have some pretty good looking senior citizens in the future." JIM: The founding the United Brethren Church near Ella, 1908

Story recalls time of great revival led by United Brethren ministers in Ella,(Goodin's Crossroads), according just a time when it was badly needed, when Christianity was at a very low ebb

By JIM

This wonderful newsletter from the Ella community appeared in the News 104 years ago yesterday - January 22nd, 1908.

One of the most wonderful revivals has just closed at the Goodin's School house, near Ella, conducted by Rev.s Boman and Lynn, of the United Brethren Church, of Reber, Casey County, Ky.

Both of these brethren came into the neighborhood finding Christianity at very low ebb, but they went to work zealously, for the cause of God, resulting in the conversion of 18 new born souls, and a mighty warming up of the professions of the different churches, and better behavior was never seen anywhere.

This meeting captured nearly all of the most wicked class of people in the country. It is earnestly desired that the good work begun will not close until all of the wicked is captured. The whole neighborhood is greatly pleased with the result of the meeting, and with the good labor of the two zealous Christian ministers.

At the close of the meeting the United Brethren organized a church with 14 members to start with and 10 additions to the United Baptist church. Both churches are aiming to build soon. We earnestly desire the prayers of God's people everywhere, that our neighborhood may soon be found on higher planes of Christianity and general good.

This just in: Rails are in place; need paint before Mayor dedicates

Superintendent Rowe's department will paint handrails, then turn responsibility over the Mayor Harris for speech
Click on headline for story with photo

Donnie Rowe, Superintendent of Streets, Columbia, KY, has called to give progress report on the rails on the Stairway to the Square off E, Adams Alley, in Downtown Columbia. "The rails are up," he said. "All we lack is dry weather to paint them and the stairs will be ready for use." Rowe himself is too busy to make the dedication speech, he said, adding that that was the Mayor's bounden duty. The rails were fabricated and installed by Columbia's Fabco, Inc., Anthony Janes CEO.

The stairs lead to the Little Corner off the Square, the historically named Well Walk, and the Public Square. An appropriate sign is planned for the entrance off the Square, and hopeful on Adams Alley, letting visitors know about the businesses along the way, Best Buy, The Community Voice and Farmland Publications, and Dr. Janella Brown's dental office.

Bear Wallow UMC was once an EUB Church, too

Heritage of United Brethren at Trinity and Barnett's Creek United Methodist Church is also shared by Bear Wallow UMC, Rev. Dale Curry, pastor of the Greensburg United Methodist Church reminds us

Dale Curry writes:
Enjoyed reading this article and also wanted to point out that Bear Wallow United Methodist Church was a previous Evangelical United Brethren congregation. Bear Wallow is my home church and although I barely remember the merger in 1968, it's still part of who I am.

Thanks also for the recent article/photo on the new restaurant and history museum on the square in Greensburg. There's been several changes since I moved here almost 20 years ago and the downtown area is much more attractive than it used to be. The next time you take one of your extended lunch hour trips to the "Burg", drive around behind Greensburg United Methodist and see the changes we're making. We tore down one building, and built a pavilion, amphitheater, playground, green space. Think you'll like it.

Hope you and your family are well.

Monday morning quarterbacking - the need for a water runoff patrol

Something we hope happens today: Individual studies to watch the effects of runoff. A friend of mine is replacing $3,000 worth of carpet because of unnecessary runoff created by open downspouts. The damage was preventable. Sometime this spring, there will likely be preventable flooding on Campbellsville Street and Fairground Street and Williams Street because of Preventable Runoff.

I was made acutely aware of what caused flooding at a Town Creek Valley lot by an observant Columbia City Police many years ago when Justin Claywell was on the force and Town Creek flooded the foot of Jamestown Hill. The water rose 10 feet closer to our house than it ever had. Officer Claywell traced the the source: New Contruction, new roof tops, an acre of blacktop at Jamestown Hill & Curry Street! It made me much more aware that new construction, in and of itself can have offsetting detrimental effects.

Columbia has come a long way since the days when run off was fluffed off with a laugh and the genius, "Tee hee hee, all I know is water runs downhill." It seems profoundly wrong today, just as the Custer decision to blacktop Guardian Street Coast to Coast was, in retrospect, a dumb choice. Water which was previously slowed gains momentum in a sheet of runoff. There.

Today would be a good day to watch where the runoff is created and see how changes could be made. It ought to be a part of every day after abnormally heavy rainfall. Today is also a good day to appreciate the urban forest which does so much to slow runoff and flooding, and to mourn the passing of the trees which took a lifetime to grow but are taken out in a moment when the real need was to bury utility lines. -EW
