Garden Club President is critical of tree topping Editorial note: The aim of the tree topping may not have been so much to save the tree as to prevent further damage to the structure, and to prevent health problems for those using the park benches. At this point, it might be better to start all over with possibly a different species. I'm a tree hugger - probably couldn't have been certificated, even before this heterodoxy - but this one seemed out of place to me; inappropriate landscaping that close to the building. -EW By Barbara Armitage This is just so sad and inexcusable. Columbia/Adair Co. offices to hold Medication Take Back Unneeded or Expired Medications can be safely disposed of on Saturday, October 29, 2011 By Rick Wilson The Medication Take Back program, under the guidelines with the DEAs National Take Back Initiative will be offered 10am-2pmCT, Saturday, October 29, 2011 on the lawn of Taco Bell, 899 Jamestown Street, Collumbia, KY. We will accept all solid dosage forms of medicines except liquids, injectibles, syringes or inhalers. Questions may be directed to 270-378-1490. Several Adair County agencies are teaming up to offer the program again this year to dispose of unneeded or expired medications: The Adair County Judges Office, The Adair County Solid Waste Management Program, The Adair County Sheriffs Office, Columbia City Police Department and The Adair County Jail. Figuring out a safe and legal way to dispose of unused or expired medications can be difficult, but help is available. Prescription medication abuse is becoming a more frequent problem. We hope to prevent misuse or abuse if we can get medicines disposed of that are not currently being used.Disposing of medications by throwing in the trash or flushing is not the recommended practice because studies have found that drugs can kill helpful bacteria in septic systems and waterways. Scientist are also finding traces of medications in streams, rivers and lakes. - RICK WILSON 2011-10-19 20:36:40 | Comments | Printable version

Frank Dickerson blames blooming aberrations on That Sinkhole Comments re article 47672 Lillian Meyer reports lilacs in her neighborhood blooming tooFrank Dickerson writes: Re: October bloomers. Thanks, Frank Dickerson An interesting, albeit surprising, surmission. You did not say which sinkhole, but I'd assume you're talking about the Billy Joe Fudge sinkhole which has been in the news so much recently. I do pray you are not resurrecting memories of the Bud Mullins' Sinkhole and its monstrous inhabitant the ogre, Bud Mullins, who frightened little children in the Greater Bliss Community not so many decades ago. So far, we ourselves have kept the wraps on that ogre, especially since it is Fall, since we don't want to frighten happy shoppers away the Holladay Place, and because it is nearly Halloween. It would be a shame to bring Bud Mullins' Sinkhole up even if the jury is still out on whether the international furore subsequent to a full disclosure would do more to help or hinder the arrival of the Canadian Tour Buses on which our New Economy so depends. I really do hope you're talking about the more benign Billy Joe Fudge sinkhole. -EW 2011-10-19 18:57:42 | Comments | Printable version

One day, Adair County, KY will become noticeable Says local leaders have become too complacent on the way things are rather than how great things could happen. Comments re article 47663 Was Adair County in running for jobs which Glasgow got By Andrew Cowan Personal commentary of the author If I had to make an uninformed guess, I would lean toward the notion there was nothing done to promote Adair County for this possible prospect or any other possible new businesses looking to locate facilities here. Letter: Also Thankful for Dunn Bros., Ronald McDonald House Janis Scott writes: Very touching article. I too, am the grandmother of premie twins who had to stay longer at Suburban, and even though we live in Louisville, they let our daughter stay in the Ronald McDonald House. It was such a relief, and so accomodating. I also now save all soft drink or can tabs and hotel soaps and shampoos to donate to them. They told me just from the tabs, they generate about $10,000.00 per year. Very worthwhile and fulfilling cause.
