A Hero. Inspired by Dakota Meyer. Poem by Patrick Perkinson

A hero
inspired by a visit on Adair County Salutes Dakota Meyer Day

By Patrick Perkinson, LaGrange, KY
A hero wakes up one day,
Not knowing what he's going to say,
To the evil at the door,
Will he be forever more,

Heroes are born and raised,
By families who know the way,
Community's deep seated roots,
Recalled as he pulls on his boots,

Out the door... into a war,
Down the street... there's always more,
Even in that desert dry,
Good morning is his battle cry,

Through the day... thinking back,
A lifetime keeps him right on track,
Drawing from his family,
And lessons from community,

War and life... life and war,
Seem to be the daily chores,
Of the heroes in the news,
Of the heroes... just like you,

Thanks to all heroes throughout history, families,
communities,
and the world.

--Patrick Perkinson, 3 October 2011
A note from the poet: I am married to Susan Smith from Columbia. She works with her mother at Flowers & Things. I am originally from Henry County but live in LaGrange, KY now. We were down there on Sunday for the celebration and it just kind of hit me. Yes, I am the author and wrote this today. I write stories that a good friend and I turn into song lyrics. I submitted to Columbia Magazine because I thought it would be a great way to relay my thoughts to people. Thank you for the consideration. - PATRICK PERKINSON

Robert Stone Poetry: Surfacewise, a sonnet

Surfacewise or core
- a sonnet reflecting on Arthur Miller's "All My Sons"
Do not confuse success with always more
for seeming little flaws come when they will
and either surfacewise or at the core
are covered over or are fixed with skill.

The outer patches tight may hold for years
if easy days persuade a happy now
but somewhere someone holds a key to fears
of final truth that hope would not allow.

The inner bandages are tight and sting
and comfort is a fleeting moment's peace
for honor chooses death, the lover's thing,
when knowing who is neighbor loves increase.

The greedy put upon themselves a curse,
ignoring safety for their private purse.

- Robert Stone, 2 October 2011

Dave Rosenbaum: Comment on John Ed Pearce and Bert Combs

Dave recommends going to the Adair County Public Library and reading all John Ed Pearce's writings. And he adds a new term to the local GWS local lexicon: Drop Downs
Comments re article 47298 Tom Chaney R730 John Ed Pearce

Dave Rosenbaum writes:
Very good article on John Ed Pearce by Mr. Chaney. John Ed was a great observer and interpreter of Kentucky. His 1994 book on the Kentucky feuds is one of a few books that kept me reading until I had finished. I sure hope that your readers who are new to Adair County ( called "drop-downs" at Fairplay) will go to the Adair Library and get all his writings.

After one particularly contentious legislative session he noted that he had, in the past, been a strong advocate of legislative independence. He repented and said that he had been wrong. He said that years earlier he had discussed legislative independence with Governor Bert Combs. Combs had said, "John Ed, it has been my experience that if nobody is running things, things don't get run". - DAVE ROSENBAUM
Thanks, Bro. Dave, for that critique. Couldn't agree with you more. The works of John Ed Pearce received the late Pete Walker's highest accolade when he said, (or maybe praised John Ed Pearce to his face,) "I guess," Walker said, "I'd rather read John Ed Pearce's stuff better than anybody's writing I know - except when when I'm at my best. Then I'd rather read me." Which was pretty Right On for everybody else. Pete Walker was one of the all time great Adair County - and that says so much - writers. -EW
