Comments on World spotlight: Adair Co. A-teams make it 5 in a row, Top 10 AND Spotlight on Luke Maupin: Member Team Kentucky, 8th in Nation!

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I am so proud of the A-team but not totally surprised. Their presentation before the Columbia City Council made it quite clear that these are students with a lot of pride, determination and confidence. It has to be their ability to "think out side of the box" that led to success at the Internationals. They will no doubt be the kind of leaders our country needs today. Special thanks to Mr. Brett Reliford and staff for providing for the program. - Robert W. Flowers

Adair Countians' hearts are swelling with pride with the accomplishments of the Academic Teams. I join them in celebrating the Worldwide high ranking of the Adair County Middle School FPS team, the Adair County High School FPS team feats in Wisconsin, and the spectacular showing of Luke Maupin and Team Kentucky in Maryland.

We do take tremendous pride in the moment; but even more, I am so elated thinking about the even greater things all of you will accomplish in the future.

My most fervent hope is that we'll continue building Adair County in such a way that all of you will be able to be a part of our future.

Doug McCammish commends ACMS team, Team Kentucky

Comment on World spotlight: Adair Co. A-teams make it 5 in a row, Top 10 AND Spotlight on Luke Maupin: Member Team Kentucky, 8th in Nation!

By Doug McCammish
Chairman, Columbia/Adair Co. Economic Development Authority

Repeated performance by Adair County teams, Future Problem Solving teams, and Team Kentucky, speaks volumes for the kids, their dedication, and their coaches. Kids who take on a challenge and prove to Kentucky, the U.S., and the world that people in little Adair County CAN do great things bodes well for their future and our future in world competition.

We know that everyone is tired of hearing about world competition, but it impacts everything we do - just ask our farmers and small business people. We have to be smarter and more inventive and more creative to get where we want to go. It is going to take dedicated and smart kids like this to get us there.

Thanks for taking the time and making the effort. -Doug

The theme for Columbia Baptist's VBS this year is "Big Apple Adventure". Each evening is kicked-off with live energetic praise and worship, kicked up a notch with drums, electric guitars, and tambourine. All are welcome to attend the opening session, which lasts about 30 minutes. Then the children begin an exciting two and a half-hour journey through different stations for Crafts, Music, Bible Study, Recreation, and an Evening Meal. Last night's dinner was hot dogs, potato chips, cut corn, and apple dippers--Yum! There is always something going on!

Spotlight on Luke Maupin and his Team Kentucky, 8th in Nation!

Special ColumbiaMagazine.com story

On June 11-12, Luke Maupin joined Team Kentucky for the National All-Star Academic Tournament. Along with two students from Paul Laurence Dunbar (Lexington) and one student from DuPont Manual (Louisville), Maupin and Team Kentucky finished 8th in the entire field, just one win behind Team Maryland and Team D.C., both of which Maupin and the Kentucky team defeated in earlier rounds.

Maupin finished preliminary play as Kentucky's leading scorer on Saturday, and the Adair Countian finished the tournament through the playoff rounds nearly evenly in total points with fellow teammate Idrees Kahloon, who made it all the way to Semi-Finals on this year's Teen Jeopardy tournament.

The event was held at the University of Maryland and featured all-star combinations state-by-state of the nation's top high school quiz bowl competitors.
