David Grigsby: Did anyone count rings on old Elm?

Did anyone happen to count the rings? I would love to know the approximate age of the Elm. I once counted the rings of a felled Redwood in Truckee California and it worked out to have sprouted around 1640. David Grigsby

Word-smithing: Getting right word with exactly right nuance

Sharon Whitehurst
Comments re article 43582 Great Wooded South Lexicon A modest proposal from Jim

By Sharon Whitehurst

I have long enjoyed word-smithing - the act of sifting through a personal lexicon to find exactly the right word or phrase to convey a nuance of meaning.

While I'm adding Adair-ese to my mental file, I'm not sure how soon I'll dare to risk the use of a new word in public. I get the gist, but not necessarily the finer points.

Would like to know names behind old houses and barns

Sharon Whitehurst writes:
Jim and I really appreciate the many photos published in CM. As we've spent the past year exploring the roads of Adair County we often slow down to observe an old house or barn lurking tipsily behind a screen of overgrown vines and shrubs. I wish I knew the names and family stories linked to each place - as I would have done in my old home town.

One of the nice features of Kentucky is the signs posted for roads and even dead-end lanes, presumably named for the remembered families who first settled in each section. - Sharon Whitehurst

Remembering Wayne Kemp: A very smart man

Mark Kemp writes:
He was my uncle. I will miss him. I did not know he was sick. I moved to Florida 10 years ago and I am a little out of touch, not to mention 800 miles. My uncle was a quiet person, but when he spoke you had to listen because I thought he was very smart. Common sense smart. Made me laugh to! To his Brian, I am sorry for your loss.-Mark Kemp

Wishes grandchildren had grapevine swing

Sandy Coomer writes:
Grapevines make the greatest swings. I remember one we all (The Bell Children) used to swing on many years ago. It swung off a bank. I even remember the last time it was used. It hung from a tree that stood in the path to our spring where we carried our drinking water. I swung and it broke loose from the top of a very tall tree and slammed my little sister on the top of the head. But we had many great years of swinging before it came down. I wish my grandchildren had one around to swing on today. Kids today don't know the fun they miss like we used to have. -Sandy Coomer

Great Wooded South Lexicon: A modest proposal from Jim

by Jim

In the spirit of cultural diversity and assimilation, perhaps the folks who are now "of here" could share some of the colloquialisms, idioms, and expressions used in the duchies where they resided before settling in the land of milk and honey, the the Auld Sod of Adair, which, according to no less an authority than Joe K. Sparks, out-vasts Texas.

Courthouse makes Columbia a great place to come home to

Alice Smith Robinson writes:
Just want to comment on this article. The Old Courthouse is a beautiful landmark. My father was one of those men who loved to sit around and whittle and talk to all of his wonderful friends/ I think he knew everyone in town - just to name a few: Frank Nell, Joe Dudley, Joe England, Bob White, Hallie Stullis and many more. I was in Columbia for a week just a week ago, spending time with my mom, who is in the nursing home there, and with the rest of the family. What wonderful memories. My father is gone now, but I will never forget the old courthouse. It makes Columbia a great place to come home to. -Alice Smith Robinson

Miss Victoria comments on official name for B, B&B

Miss Victoria Pike writes:
Might better hold up on that official name of the place (Miss Victoria's Boarding House, Bread, Bed and Breakfast House, Tourist Home, and Home Away from Home for Families of Refinement). I must check first with my chief financial advisor, Hack Rowe. Can't do anything without his input. Have a great day.
Extremely smart. There are those in Adair County who still remember Hack Rowe, not only for his spectacular basketball play, his envied Wimbledom tennis form, and his sagacious political wisdom, but as the greatest hotelier in South Central Kentucky since King Crenshaw. Getting his advice for the Bed, Bread and Breakfast is wise. For those who are unaware, Mrs. Pike and her mother Gertrude Browning farm one of Kentucky's most coveted properties at the Great American crossroads, KY 61 S at the Louie B. Nunn Parkway. -EW

Has never seen as noisy a town as Columbia

Comments re article 43554. Racket not keeping her awake but is annoyingDonna Saunders writes:
With regard to the speeding car noise - I wish I had a nickel for every one of those cars on a daily basis here on Burkesville Street. I would be beyond rich!!! I have never seen as noisy a town as it is here in Columbia. Most of the time along with the noise comes the speeding too. We've lived here 7 years now and it still amazes us!!!! - Donna Saunders
Note: I wish I could disagree with you. I can't. You are absolutely right. Unnecessary and intolerable noise levels have been a chronic but easily preventable problem in this city since I was a kid many decades ago. Quite possibly, it is the biggest single economic development problem we have. New laws aren't necessary to stop most of it. Speeding is evident and the police have radar. The same car can harrass and threaten downtown for hours, often during peak dining hours, during church services, and, yes, even during funerals. Kentucky statutes make it illegal to modify muffler systems. This is a no brainer. And in many instances the loud noises accompany and encourage illegal activity, which simply means that the first step to taking back our town from drug dealers is to enforce existing noise and speed laws. That is simply not being done. If the problems with speeding and loud noise on Burkesville Street to the bypass were addressed, it would have a ripple effect on the other streets. That's were our focus ought to start. -Ed Waggener
