Word-smithing: Getting right word with exactly right nuance

Comments re article 43582 Great Wooded South Lexicon A modest proposal from Jim

By Sharon Whitehurst

I have long enjoyed word-smithing - the act of sifting through a personal lexicon to find exactly the right word or phrase to convey a nuance of meaning.

While I'm adding Adair-ese to my mental file, I'm not sure how soon I'll dare to risk the use of a new word in public. I get the gist, but not necessarily the finer points.

My Grampa Mac grew up in the hamlet of Graphite, NY in the Adirondacks. The ethnic influence there was strongly Scots/English with a bit of Irish.

Where a southerner might say, "I'm fixing to do that," Grampa Mac would have said, "I'm getting ready to commence." Implicit in this phrase is the sense that preparation is taking too long and one needs to get on with the task.

Two of my favorite idioms from our recent dozen years in Wyoming:
  • "I drug that loaded trailer over South Pass in a blizzard."

  • "Drug" is the past tense of the verb "drag."
In an instance where I might remark that I need to clean my kitchen, a Wyoming home maker would state, "My kitchen wants cleaned." -Sharon Whitehurst
