How a little kitten entered their lives, was dubbed 'Sassy Cat,' was relegated to the garage, and now stays constantly underfoot, is pampered, and lives life royalty would envy

Poets and Poetry for December, Part V: Kentucky Poet : Effie Waller Smith

I had never heard of Effie Waller Smith (1879-1960) until the spring of 2002. I was fortunate then to attend a reading of several short plays written by my good friend Nancy Gall-Clayton. These plays focus on notable women from Kentucky history and form part of a collection entitled Women of the 15th State. Directed by Kathi E. B. Ellis, the plays were presented as an ensemble at the Highland Woman's Club in Louisville.

Jim finds old ad promoting Radon Water for health

Christmas in Columbia, 1948 -- Sparklet revealed! "Jim" follows up on Cyrus/Christmas in Columbia, 1948

"Jim" writes:
Cyrus' "Christmas in Columbia, 1948" article piqued my curiosity about Sparklet ("Brown Drug Store and Paull Drug Co. had their usual wide selection of gifts for all, everything from fancy box soap...to Sparklet.")

A few minutes research turned up a revealing bit of information: Sparklet.

I love this from the advertising blurb near the bottom: "Radon (Radio-active) Water consumed as a table water will prove of considerable value in retaining a healthy state of the system...It is an all-round tonic and invaluable also as a treatment for rheumatism, arthritis and nervous disorders."
Thanks, Jim, for recalling this great Cyrus entry. It's also been added to our annual list of Great Christmas CM Christmas stories links. If other Christmas stories are found in the archives which should be in the bibliography, please let us know. -EW

Cyrus/Christmas in Columbia, 1948 (Reprint from 2005)

Article with 2010 updates; first printed 2005-12-18.

From the ads in an old county paper, Cyrus has woven together a picture of what Christmas was like 57 years ago in Columbia; afterword by an Ancient One on where-what-is-now, follows Cyrus' story
Announcement of the official start of the 1948 Christmas shopping season appeared in the December 8th edition of the Adair County News in this brief entry:
Columbia Decorated for Christmas

"Thanks to the efforts of the Rotary and Kiwanis Clubs, Columbia's Public Square is gaily decorated with colored lights, adding greatly to the "Christmas Spirit." which prevails at this season...

"The beautifully decorated shop windows surrounding the Square, filled with all types of gifts to tempt even the most discriminating purchaser and the bright colored lights which are turned on at dusk, makes one realize that Christmas is almost here."
And my-oh-my--the treasures one could buy on and near the Square! Just a sampling:

Thanks to Jim - and why pearls of the past need revisiting

Linda Waggener writes:
This is just to say thank you to Jim, the researcher with extraordinary talent for finding what Oris Aaron once referred to as "pearls" and reminding us why they need to be revisited.

I should also say thanks to Beth Grant for commenting on Jim's contribution because her sincere note of family pride stirred me to read it more thoroughly and discover one of the most beautiful letters to a local paper I've ever read. Those counties he outlined as having so much in common do so to this day.

And as hard as it is to admit it, I should thank my first husband Ed who was always one to expect people to write things down and share them with their local newspaper. As a Metcalfe County High School reporter to the local Edmonton Herald-News when he was the new publisher, I once shrugged and said there'd be no column that week because there was simply nothing going on at school. Ed gave me a look of alarm and said, "that's when you are your most creative! Get back to writing"

I enlisted the help of my mother and the community and that may have been the week that the MCHS school news branched out to include headlines of Knob Lick chickens that were laying mysterious green colored eggs. But that's another story.

Thanks Jim and Beth and Ed. - Linda

It's Just Me Again No. 005: My Foxy-Looking Teacher
The next earlier Chuck Hinman story: Running away from home

by Chuck Hinman

For who knows what reason, winters were extremely severe when I was going to country grade school. I went to New Hope school in Gage County, Nebraska during the time period 1928 to 1935. Mercy, that's over 70 years ago!

Snow-fences (remember them) were in place on east-west roads well before the onset of snowy weather. It wasn't uncommon to be delayed getting to your destination because you were "snowed in" -- not for just a couple of hours, but for days or until the snowplow opened up the roads again.

Old Time Pear Tree for National Tree of Adair Co., KY
Oldtimey Pears

Oldtimey or Kieffer pears offer delicious fruit, beautiful foliage, and gorgeous flowers. This pear tree, owned and photographed by Billie Jo Farris, Red Bud Lane, in the Vester community, offered all three at the same time in August 2008. "We have a pear tree on our farm that is loaded with pears and in full bloom," she wrote when she sent this photo then. "I have never seen anything like it before."
