100 Years Ago: A bit of nonsense

Government positions were open: Groundhog Inspectors & Doodlebug Callers

By J.D. Gee

In the early part of 1907, the Kentucky legislature had in the neighborhood of 500 bills to consider, but, much to the apparent disgust of the Eddyville Herald, undue attention was given a bill that would fix Groundhog Day either as February 1st, 2nd, or the 14th, "as there is a claim laid to each of these dates." The Herald proceeded, editorial wordstrop firmly planted in the editorial cheek, to inform the Legislature that the good people of Eddyville believed the passage of the Dirt Pig Day bill to be of much more importance than the other "half a thousand" pieces of legislation before that august body.

Sycamore Springs: You can almost hear that old barn

Inspired by: Scenic Cumberland Co KY: Barn picture by Johnnietta Jessie

By Cynthia Meyer
Commentary from Sycamore Springs, KY

One could almost hear the times in its younger year when the barn was in use.

The jingle of the harness as the teams of mules hauled wagons loaded with corn in, out of the weather.

Calves bawling for their mothers when separated for the first time.

Hogs' vocal taunts as they anxiously await for their troughs to be filled with water or feed.

Charles Marshburn thinks CM needs a Restaurants Review

Writer even suggests one; who declines, with tell-all confession of just why not, even though the job has been a lifelong ambition, a lifelong dream
About: It's Just Me Again No. 077 Eating Out

Ed,

What about a weekly article by yourself in the Food and Wine section reviewing the finer restaurants in the area?

You could rate by healthy, interesting, price, healthy, interesting, etc. Did I say healthy and interesting more than once?

You could include how far you had to drive and if the fare was healthy and interesting!

Since this would be under the wine category, you could also mention the beverage menu. Just a thought.

s/Charles Marshburn

CM posted 30,000th news article

Just a note for a date in CM history: Sunday, October 17, 2010, at 2:39pmCT, the 30,000th story was posted on ColumbiaMagazine.com.

The story is one about the best band in the land, entitled Adair Band Grand Champion at Knight-fest and is by Shamarie Claiborne.

Fittingly, it is an upbeat story about a group which makes us all so very, very proud.

Except for a very few stories inadvertently deleted, all of 30,000 items are still on the site and are searchable.

AMIDST THE TREES

I heard a tree who was standing by the street;
He called to me and said, "Please have a seat.
Now just sit and listen to what I have to say
For I'm sick and hurt and could die any day."

Very Sad epilogue to Bear or Cow story

About: Is it a BEAR or COW

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

In case you haven't already found out (which I'm sure you have.) It was, in fact, a calf. How do I know? I had to stand in the rain and watch while waiting for the cops after somebody hit it and just ran off. One of the saddest things i have ever seen was a cop shoot the bull calf to put it out of its misery.

Poetry by Robert Stone: Masters, a sonnet

Masters
- a sonnet for Jason Driskill

Within us is desire to rule all things
and therefore we rejoice and fear each birth,
not knowing if the newborn will have wings
to shadow us with hope or fear or dearth.

Without us are the engines moving lives
and by what elements both large and small
we see not how but only what survives
displayed with pride or shut behind a wall.

About us is the world that we create
and only we our boundaries have fixed
to shut the other out or share in fate,
to strive for sameness or for pleasures mixed.

The overmastering are overthrown,
true masters are but masters of their own.

- Robert Stone, 17 October 2010

Tom Chaney. Review of Fall of the Giants, Ken Follett

A WORLD MADE NEW

Ken Follett has been a favorite writer of mine for a bunch of years. He has created some dozen and a half fine adventure novels - which contain spies and Nazis and assorted other villains. Wings of Eagles and Hammer of Eden come quickly to mind.

A few years ago he blew me away with Pillars of Earth, an account of the construction of a gothic cathedral in the thirteenth century.

Rev. Joey N. Welsh: Autumn

This essay also appeared in the Munfordville, KY, Hart County Herald, on 24 September 2006; reprinted with author permission
ANOTHER ANGLE, the occasional musings of a Kentucky pastor"
Autumn: Endings, beginnings, and transitions

The next previous essay, Making it on the Broken Pieces

By The Rev. Joey N. Welsh

The coming of autumn reminds us again of the transitional quality of existence. No season, no status, no condition is forever. Whether we talk about the calendar or the weather or our own lives, some things are always coming to an end while other things are being born or renewed. In our part of the northern hemisphere fall is the time when the growing season comes to an end and the world seems to die away as winter approaches.

100 Years Ago: For Sunday, October 17

100 years ago: socials, singings, spellings, and a dinner on the ground. Adair County Sunday Singings, now a tradition, were important then, when the 'father of modern Gospel music' paid a visit to the Pellham community

By "Jim"

October, 1910 found Adair County farm families -- the vast majority of the populace -- in the midst of wrapping up late summer crops, sowing winter wheat, making sorghum, and generally preparing for winter.

And, in addition to the usual assortment of sicknesses and mishaps reported in the News, Adair County was still in the throes of a diphtheria epidemic. Reports of school closings, deaths, near-deaths, and lingering illness from that dread disease had regularly appeared for a number of weeks by the time mid-October rolled around.

A recent item on the evening menu here at Tallgrass Estates was "Hot Roast Beef Sandwich, Mashed Potatoes and Gravy, Cranberry Sauce, Soup de jour, and Dessert Cart."

It reminded me of the times in my childhood when Dad had enough money to take us out to eat whenever we went to our big nearby city -- Beatrice, Nebraska, population -- 12,257.
