Preservation is for future generations About: Letter: Not willing to foot bill for preservation By Billy Joe Fudge I, like many of your readers, am concerned about the enormous federal debt that is hanging over our heads and the threat that debt carries for posterity. The borrowing of money to fund projects that primarily benefit the present with blatant intent of passing the payment for these projects on to a future generation is a low blow of the highest degree. This is kind of like buying a new car and making arrangements for your child to pay for it sometime in the future. However, that is not what we are speaking about with the restoration of our Adair County Courthouse. This restoration project will not only enhance the present downtown situation, but will pass on to future generations a positive piece of history and a continual, cultural and commercial anchor for their community. This is kind of like paying to have your kid's cavities filled so they can eat better now and avoid the need for dentures when they are older. -Billy Joe Fudge 2010-10-03 17:06:18 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Commentary

Biking: from North of Columbia to Dale Hollow Resort Park Why cycle when you can get there by car? 'Getting there is part of the adventure,' writer says. Usually Gary & Diane Rose ride their bicycle built for two; but this their first trip on singles. Both bikes were loaded with gear, but to equalize riding styles, he pulled the trailer. For them, it was unknown territory on KY 704. That was a beautiful experience. He said. One minute they were riding on top of the world; then they dropped 300 feet over Dug Hill into the best part of the trip, along the valley of Crocus Creek, down into picturesque Amandaville, Bakerton in Cumberland Co. When disaster struck and the trailer became disabled, the trip took a turn - Click on headline for full story plus photos By Gary Rose Diane and I headed out for long weekend on Friday September 24th on a bicycle/camping trip. Our goal was to get to Dale Hollow State Park from our home in Adair County. Diane and I have completed other bicycle/camping trips before, but always riding our bicycle built for two. This adventure was our first attempt at riding our singles and splitting the load between two bikes. Even though our riding styles are similar they still are different. The idea of splitting load was an attempt to equalize our styles. Article continues... click title or click here to read whole article. 2010-10-03 07:44:10 | Comments | Printable version
Rev. Joey N. There is one change at the very end which I put within brackets,' ROBERT STONE The next earlier Another Angle: HISTORIC ANNIVERSARIES AND UNFINISHED AGENDAS - Part III By The Rev. Joey N. Welsh I have been through some trying times in recent years - complications from diabetes, eight hospitalizations, and 13 surgeries. After two and a half years in a wheelchair I am now at long last doing things I was incapable of undertaking for a long, long time, such as: standing, walking, preaching from a pulpit, and driving where I want when I want. Through it all I have cherished my sense of humor. When one of my dear friends said, "Keep your chin up," my response was immediate. I replied, "Which chin?" People who are "ample" will know of what I was speaking. I found that the ability to laugh at myself was one essential ingredient for staying on even emotional and spiritual keel, and I called on that facility often. Letter: Not willing to foot bill for preservation We're sure many others feel as Mark Hale does. It is easy to think that doing away with this important part of Columbia's heritage is the cheap thing to do. The cost for preservation will fall largely on private donors. The cost for demolition and redoing the area the old courthouse now occupies will be a minimum of $150,000 which has to be repaid to the Federal government, immediately, plus other incidental cost which could raise the cost to the taxpayers to as much as $200,000. Tear it down and it's like paying child support for the rest of your life without the privilege of ever seeing the child. Keep it, let the private sector foot the bill, and keep a part of our heritage intact for all to enjoy, and for the economic benefits it will keep. -Ed Waggener/ CM About: Believer in signs is scared by what she sees To ColumbiaMagazine.com I don't think anybody can remember Columbia not having a clock tower atop of the court house. It is of historic significance. But as times change so must things of the past. I like our old court house especially the clock tower, but I'm not willing to foot the bill to keep it going.
