Carol Perkins: A Free Trip This 'free' trip probably ended up costing as much as a seven day Caribbean Cruise. Now when those faxes roll out of the machine, they go straight into the trash can. 'You get what you pay for,' Carol Perkins The next earlier Carol Perkins column, School Bullies II By Carol Perkins Four days in Florida and three days in the Bahamas for only $99 per person. The ad rolled out of our fax machine long before advertising via fax was commonplace. Then I read the fine print: $129 port charges per person too. This was still a fairly inexpensive trip, considering a rental car was thrown n. This free trip was now up to around $450. As I dialed the number to talk to our own special agent, Guy was cautiously listening nearby. On the lowering the Flag. A civics lesson The law about flying the flag at half-staff seems to be intentionally general, and to leave room for people to lawfully show. . . respect as they deem appropriate. -CM Adair Countians have used the general interpretation in the past, as when the American flag was lowered to half staff by former Mayor Curtis Hardwick at the death of William "Daddy Bill" Walker. What follows are letters with differing points of view from Reade Heskamp, Joe Hare, and Beverly Merritt, and then some extensive research by CM on the subject. which supports the interpretation that both the former Mayor and the current CJE properly ordered the honor. We respect the differences in opinion. This is, after all, America. -EW Article continues... click title or click here to read whole article. 2010-08-22 14:00:19 | Comments | Printable version

Comment on Mr. David Hawpe in town Hi, Ed Looking at Photo Archives on Columbia Magazine, see where Mr. David Hawpe was in town. Did you or your brother get to discuss the Courier-Journal's opposition to Route 66 being completed? I take it Ralph didn't. I didn't see any knots on Mr. Hawpe's head !! LOL. s/Ken Neat While everybody in South Central Kentucky knows who 'Ralph' is, for those from off who don't, he is Ralph Roy Waggener, the editor of the respected "Just for a Smile News," which sometimes does not see eye to eye with the Commonwealth's other major print media, including the Its Ozness at Sixth and Broadway in Louisville, KY. 2010-08-22 11:11:20 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Letters and Reader Feedback
Ken Hill: On having whittling at Downtown Days "The 'whittling' we seek is more a state of mind than a physical exercise. That state of mind is what seems to be lacking, and what we long for; that which cannot be regulated, subsidized, advertised, or prompted," -KEN HILL Amen -CM About: Whittling vs. Carving: The distinctions, if any, are sought By Ken Hill As Ann pointed out, there is a difference between whittling and carving. Many whittlers will occasionally carve something if the mood strikes, but carving requires thought and concentration on the project. Whittling, on the other hand, allows the mind and spirit to drift freely along while the hands do their work. Whittling can be a cleansing experience, much like a drive in the country with no pre-determined destination. As to having whittling at Downtown Days, I think it is a great idea. But, herein lies the problem. Saying "We are having whittling at Downtown Days" is much akin to saying, "Breathing will be a featured attraction at the Downtown Days." Her e-mail reminded me of the time in the early 1930's, when our country school entered a float in the Gage County, Nebraska country school parade. It was in connection with the yearly Gage County Fair. Our float was built around a song, "Twenty Froggies Went to School."
