About: A letter from Adair Co Judge Executive Ann Melton

To ColumbiaMagazine.com

I'm a Veteran and I see nothing wrong with flying the flag a half staff for this young lady. She a person like everyone else; so maybe at this time she hadn't served in the military. Ann was just trying to show some respect for this young lady.

Thank You

s/Robert Horton

John Roy was the unofficial mayor Royville, KY

About: Lisa FisherClark recalls going to town, to Royville

By "Jim"

Editor Waggener's wish that "some demographer ought to figure out just how much bigger than Somerset the metroplex of Royville, Russellville, and Jamestown would be if the urban area, from Chicken Ridge in Adair County, to Lake Cumberland, were all one city," puzzled me a bit at first. On second thought, realization hit that he meant Russell Springs instead of Russellville.

Upon third thought, however, it occurred to me that he did indeed mean Russellville and simply was trying to include enough area to match, hectare for hectare, the area engulfed by the Greater Gerrymander formerly known as Burnside. (Alas, Editor Waggener may have come up a few hectares short.)

Ive always suspected that metropolitan Royville is the area bounded thus: From the westernmost point of Royville proper west to Chicken Ridge, thence northeast to the city limits of Sano, thence southeast to Ono; from there, east and slightly north to Esto, thence due north back to the starting point. (The Sacred Triangle of Sano-Ono-Esto being to Russell County what the Vatican is to Rome, albeit no Swiss Guard in The S.T. -EW).
At any rate, each and every citizen of Royville was and is well above average in the famous department.

I can't recall from whom my folks bought the Royville store (the only one at the time), but Mr. John Roy, for whom the community was named and who served as the unofficial Mayor, was the original owner.

School pizza lunch could have been even healthier

About: Thinks balanced diet in home and school needed

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

There were other healther items I could have loaded my plate with such as fresh grapes, and apple sauce in my defense I did get salad and corn which were very good for me. And I could have had baked chips to replace the corn, if I wanted to eat healthy. I wanted good.

I actually was very impressed with the spread they had available. I could have had Pizza, Apple Sauce, Grapes and a Salad, and actually the wonderful lunch lady wanted me to have the apple sauce and grapes, which would have been better for me; but I was in the mood for Rice Crispy treats! Sorry -

Epicurean Kentuckian:
Have a good grasshopper recipe?

Those who are preparing grasshoppers to be et might want to check out the details on preparation in Grasshopper Recipes with Real Insect Recipes
. Though it's Bible to eat locusts, we never heard a single sermon on the proper preparation of grasshoppers for a nice buttered shrimp style grasshopper entree. Just know that the general rule is that fat young ones are better than the later ones, which tend to dryer and less wholesome, we're told.

It should be noted, of course, that here in the Buckle of the Bible Belt, (or in close proximity to it - very near the Sano-Esto-Ono Sacred Triangle), we take the Word literally, shunning all pig, camel, and fishes without scales. (We eat catfish only with a special ecclesiastical dispensation, and never, never, indulge in ersters. Taboo is, after all, taboo.)

If a reader has prepared Buttered Adair County Fat Summer Grasshoppers and would like to share the recipe, that would be great! A photo would be nice, too. -EW

Chickens are feasting on bumper crop of hoppers

About: Insects of Kentucky Grasshopper

To ColumbiaMagazine.com

There are a lot of these (grasshoppers) this year and my chickens love them. They are fun to watch trying to catch them.

There are a lot of butterflies this year also. There were several different kinds on a bush in my yard the other day.

There were also some strange bugs on the same bush. I tried to take a picture of one bug to send to Columbia Magazine but the batteries were dead.

s/Ed Waggener

Thanks. Sorry about the batteries. ColumbiaMagazine is way short of photos of strange bugs. Hope readers will remember to help. -EW

Lisa Fisher-Clark recalls going to town at Royville

WAIN FM 93.5 Radio personality Lisa Fisher-Clark has fond memories of Royville, including casting her first vote for a President of the United States in its little polling place

About: Hardscratch essay reminds Jim of Royville KY store

By Lisa-Fisher Clark

I grew up on Beckhamridge so I spent a lot of time in Royville.

Some of my fondest memories are those of my grandpa Otis Kell, who some jokingly called the "Mayor of Beckhamridge," taking my cousin Cindy, who is an Adair County teacher, and me to Denny Ray's store for a Rocket Pop or Orange Push-up.
