Epicurean Kentuckian:
Have a good grasshopper recipe?

Those who are preparing grasshoppers to be et might want to check out the details on preparation in Grasshopper Recipes with Real Insect Recipes. Though it's Bible to eat locusts, we never heard a single sermon on the proper preparation of grasshoppers for a nice buttered shrimp style grasshopper entree. Just know that the general rule is that fat young ones are better than the later ones, which tend to dryer and less wholesome, we're told.

It should be noted, of course, that here in the Buckle of the Bible Belt, (or in close proximity to it - very near the Sano-Esto-Ono Sacred Triangle), we take the Word literally, shunning all pig, camel, and fishes without scales. (We eat catfish only with a special ecclesiastical dispensation, and never, never, indulge in ersters. Taboo is, after all, taboo.)

If a reader has prepared Buttered Adair County Fat Summer Grasshoppers and would like to share the recipe, that would be great! A photo would be nice, too. -EW

Insects of Kentucky: Dinner time for Mantis

2010-08-16 - Photo by Barbara Armitage. 1535 Bull Run Road
Reply to request for Grasshopper Recipe: "While I have eaten some pretty strange things in my life - up here at Tucker's Station we prefer to leave the grasshoppers to the Praying Mantis," writes Barbara Armitage. "They seem to prefer them raw and that's fine with me. It's too hot to cook anyway."
