Remembering Dana Garrett Bradshaw: She was an inspiration

About: Obituary: Dana Garrett Bradshaw, 86, Cumberland Co., KY

By Sue Stivers

Dana Bradshaw was a beautiful lady inside and out.

During the years I worked in Cumberland County, she, her husband and daughters were like "family" to me.

She was a great 4-H leader...always made time to volunteer to help the Marrowbone School 4-H club members.

Dana was my encourager... my inspiration...and role model. Throughout my 40 plus years in Columbia/Adair County, every time I saw Dana and Edwin they never failed to tell me how much they loved and appreciated me and always thanked me for the positive impact that I made, not only on youth and families, but the entire county.

There is truly a void in my life in the loss of Dana and Edwin, but I am thankful for their love and friendship since 1966.-Sue Stivers

A barbed comment about barbed wire from Judge H.C. Baker

About Barbed Wire: A common sight in Adair Co., KY

By JD Gee

Kristie Keene's up close and personal photo of barbed wire brought to mind the quote attributed by Judge H.C. Baker to William Stewart (1830-1904) upon Stewart's inspection of the first such fence built in Adair County:
"Well, it may keep the stock inside from getting out, and the stock outside from getting in, but my judgment is that the wires can never be put close enough together to the man out of h--- who would build such a fence."
A few months after Mr. Stewart's passing in 1904, Melvin White, an Adair County native who frequently contributed to the News from his home in North Carolina, wrote somewhat fondly of Mr. Stewart that "His wit was scathing and his satire skinning." -JD Gee

(ADV) Myra Harrison Farmers Market report:
Tuesday, July 27, 2010

QUICK SHOP Printable Shopping List of all vendors products for today, Tuesday, July 27, 2010.

By Myra Harrison

It's a great day to take advantage of the cooler weather and the big selection at the Adair County Farmers Market. Thanks to all who are making this the most successful year yet for the growers.

Today there is plenty. Margie Rooks has really turned on with the Watermelons. Jeff Scott has an excused absence and left stuff with me. Boss Blair is playing hooky today; he's not here. Just hope he is okay. But everybody else is here and in a pretty good humor.

On a personal note, thanks to everybody who enjoys my reports, especially those who have emailed me to let me know they check it every market day.

Libby and I recently took a day trip to Bowling Green with our two youngest grandsons, Harrison Knifley and Jackson Hinton. We enjoyed our time together at Lost River Cave, 2818 Nashville RD, Bowling Green, KY.

The boat ride inside the cave was a really neat, fun, and educational experience. The history of the cave, it's many uses over the years and it's importance to both the culture and economy of the area was very interesting.
