Homer Goodin would be so proud

About: Goodins finish 1-2-3 in The Pines Invitational golf tournament

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

The article about my niece and great-nieces, Lauren, Ashley, and Kim Goodin placing 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in the golf tournament made me very happy for them.

Then I immediately felt an overwhelming sadness that my brother, Homer Goodin, wasn't alive to enjoy their success and be able to brag about "his girls" at the feed mill for the coming year.

No one loved golf or those 3 ladies more than he did.

HealthCare.gov gives options under Affordable Care Act

New HealthCare.gov website outlines options now available to Americans under changes in Healthcare Law. What private plan health insurance plans must offer in preventitive services, and new efforts to reduce childhood obesity

Ed:

When you hear about the new health reform law these days, too much talk is focused on the political.

What I've found is that most Americans just want to know how this new law helps their families stay healthy - and how it reduces their costs.

Happy Birthday, George Thomas Keltner

George T. Keltner's birthday in Birthdays and Anniversaries marks Red Letter record in Celebrations: Birthdays, In Memory Birthdays, and Anniversaries
It appears to be Celebration No. 25, a record setter

By Ed Waggener

Today's Birthdays and Anniversaries seem to mark a high point in terms of numbers. We don't have a quick way to check, but when Alissa Barnes sent word that her father, it was her father's, George T. Keltner's, birthday today, we think that was Celebration No. 25 for the day. and a record-setter for the most ever in the list.

The way we counted: Each of the anniversaries count as one celebration, but twins sharing a birthday count as two, and In Memory Birthdays count as 1 each.

We think that is the way the late, great Columbia Mayor Coy Downey would have counted for any official record going into the World Record Book of Guinnesses.

Interesting Link: Some states going back to gravel roads

Jon Halsey of Knifley, KY sent a link to an interesting story of what's happening to roads in some states. The link, is to a Wall Street Journal story,
Roads to Ruin: Towns Rip Up the Pavement:
Asphalt Is Replaced By Cheaper Gravel; 'Back to Stone Age'
He didn't make a judgment call on it, but it is thought-provoking. It's hard to see how, on heavily traveled roads, the net effect could be good to go the gravel, one can see some advantages for gravel surfaces instead of paving for driveways and parking lots, especially where the grade is not so steep that washing becomes a problem. Gravel is certainly cooler.

Poetry by Robert Stone: Determination

Determination
- a villanelle by Robert Stone, inspired by Eoghan Camron
I won't feel sorry for myself I say,
resolving never more a wasted night.
Determination is my strength today.

What failed to be, what may not come, betray
the satisfactions in my present sight.
I won't feel sorry for myself I say.

I will no longer dawdle and delay
but steel my mind and soul for faithful fight.
Determination is my strength today.

Old comforts fail and new seem far away
and yet unyielding to my former fright,
I won't feel sorry for myself I say.

I will escape the valleys where I stray
and strive to gain at last a hopeful height.
Determination is my strength today.

The selfish aims I hide, the good display
and seek to live within a loving light.
I won't feel sorry for myself I say:
Determination is my strength today.

How Raider Bob became the Blue Raider mascot

Or, How Columbia, Adair Co., KY, became the swashbuckling capitol of the world-CM

By Duane Bonifer

It is unclear why the nickname "Blues" was adopted, although in the 1920s and '30 it was common for intercollegiate teams to be known by a color. For example, Mississippi State University's intercollegiate teams were known as the Maroons before being called the Bulldogs.

Carol Perkins: Hoosier hospitality in outlet mall

There's a lesson here: They were closing, but clerks in the Edinburgh, IN Oshkosh outlet store let Carol Perkins do some last minute shopping, and went way beyond the call of duty to help her get the purchases she needed.

With only an hour to shop before the stores closed, I made a quick stop at my favorite places at this outlet mall. I was on my way home from a trade show and didn't leave enough time for an outlet stop only thirty-five miles from Indianapolis, in the Edinburgh Premium Outlet. Unlike many outlets across the country, this one is thriving.

Life-long learning and fullness of appreciation

In a recent sermon I referenced the novel Gilead by Marilynne Robinson. This book won the 2005 Pulitzer Prize for fiction and the 2006 Grawemeyer Award for Religion. I think it is a wonderful story, centering on a man who is thoroughly good and caring. The Reverend John Ames, the narrator, is a third-generation minister, the Congregational pastor in a small southwest Iowa town in the 1950's.

A widower who has married again late in life and become a father, he adores his very young son who is 70 years younger than he. Ames knows that his heart problems won't let him live much longer, and he wants his son to grow up knowing some things about the Ames family history, about faith and scripture, about relationships, and about real love and grace.

Poetry: Adair County Prayer

Adair County Prayer
by Billy Joe Fudge
O Lord, You know our hearts and minds,
How flawed and weak we are sometimes.
You know our frailty and our vice,
And our aversion to Your advice.

You also know our hearts desire
To be set ablaze with Your Fire.
So arouse us Lord to greater heights
And illuminate our darkest nights.

Help us O Lord to mountains speak;
Make us strong, yet mild and meek.
Hearten us to not push and shove -
And fill us with Your Hope and Love.

The Time Mom Taught Me To Control My Temper

My writings are full of accounts of scraps between my brother and me. Bob was two years older and dominated our scraps. It remained that way until I was 16 years old. Over night, I increased in size and strength and "Voila'!" - the scraps were over!

We became best friends until his death a few years ago. The reason I know the scraps were one-sided at the time was this.

100 Years Ago:
Spicy bits from the front page of the News

By "Jim"

The short entries on the front page of the July 20, 1910 News were considerably more interesting - "spicier," in the parlance of the day - than were the longer articles with their splashy headlines. (Among the latter: a suicide in the Fairplay community, a murder in Jamestown, the previously secret marriage of Leondis Braxton "Brack" Cain and Alice Murrell revealed, and a report of the statewide crop damage wrought by the heavy July rains.)

Perhaps you, gentle CM reader, can forgive some of the headlines created for the following tidbits, as your humble contributor made them up well past supper and long before breakfast, in that murky mental twilight between one pill wearing off and another kicking in.

Best Meatloaf, Pimiento Cheese was at drugstore
