Dumbfounded by number from Adair who were WWII POWs

About: Veterans World War II: Veterans from Adair Co., KY, held as Prisoners of War

To ColumbiaMagazine.com

I am dumbfounded at the number of young men from Adair County that were taken prisoner in WWII, surely this is some kind of record. My father Sanford Green received four bronze stars for his service. He never wanted to tell us what had happened to him in the war. We do know he was in North Africa, France and Germany.

(ADV) It's time for lunch, time to see What's Cooking

Suggestion. Skip all of this and just Fast Forward to What's Cooking for today
Everything was up in the What's Cooking Section by 9amCT this morning, and it presents a fabulous array of choices.

There's a little news from the restaurants, too. Betty's OK Country Cooking announced the winner of the $100 giveaway for March 13, 2010. (The name's in OKCC listing. Betty's has peach cobbler today.)

An Epicurean Kentuckian Dessert: Chocolate Pecan Pie
Photo by Pen.Chocolate Pecan Pie baked by Kyla, and an Ethiopian Yirgacheffe in one of those cool old Nescafe mugs from the Sunday papers
We received a letter this morning from a diner who wanted to know when the buffet menu for Mulligan's is posted. And for those others who haven't noticed, it usually arrives between 7:45 and 9amCT.

The Cafe on the Square What's Cooking listing now includes the Soup of the Day, and starting next week, the Sandwich of the week will be included.

Buffalo Hills usually is one of the first to post the menu for the day, but the Buffalo Man was off-planet in Chicago, IL, over the weekend, and was the very last to report, but he is offering their famous Buffalo Burgers and Grilled Chicken Salad and Cream Potato Soup today.

Route 61 Diner and it's kinfolk restaurant, Quick Stop, are competing with each other for two of the really low cost lunches for the day, with one offering a combo at 4.25, undercutting the companion restaurant by a full 2 bits. May not seem like a lot of money these days, but just a very few quarters buys a lot at these two John Thomas diners.

Rerun's Restaurant at 3399 Holmes Bend RD, is always a place for a hearty fill for not very much money. They're serving a meatloaf special today, and one thing's for sure, it will be cooked good, there will be plenty on the plate, and the price will be reasonable.

As usual, Huddle House in Campbellsville has a link to the menu. The restaurant, owned and operated by Toria, Adair County, KY, native Gaylon Yarberry, is open 24/7, 364 days a year. To answer the question on postings in What's Cooking: We post as the material is received. Some days, everybody is up by 7:30amCT, other days it may be as late as 9:30amCT. We hope you check often - and if your favorite restaurant is using What's Cooking, let them know you'd like to see it posted here. You can tell them that it doesn't cost much in money to do so.

Billy Joe Fudge: Poetry is meant to be read aloud

About: Choices is wonderful readaloud poem letter from Linda Waggener and Geniece Marcum

By Billy Joe Fudge

Poetry is created to be read and recited aloud. Silently reading poetry is like trying to enjoy ocean waves crashing on shore while watching TV.

A little exercise for you to try is to yourself while setting down read the 23rd Psalm. Then stand up and read it aloud. I think you will find that the words of David, the author, coming out of your mouth will speak to you with a fullness you've not experienced before.

The same will happen for you with any poetry. Read it to yourself to familiarize yourself with it, then stand up and read it aloud.

100 Years Ago: Points Regarding the 1910 Census

By Jim

With census forms due to arrive in the mail this week, as early as today, CM readers may find the following to be of interest.
"The law requires every adult person to furnish the prescribed information, but also provides that it shall be treated confidentially...

"The President has issued a Proclamation, calling on all citizens to co-operate with the Census and assuring them that it has nothing to do with taxation, army or jury service, compulsory school attendance, regulation of immigration, or enforcement of any law, and that no one can injured by answering the inquiries.

"It is of the utmost importance that the census of population...in this state be complete and correct.

"Therefore, every person should promptly, accurately and completely answer the questions...

"The enumerators will wear a badge inscribed, 'U.S. Census, 1910.'"
The above is excerpted from an article in the April 13, 1910 Adair County News. The President at the time was Republican William Howard Taft, who served 1909-1913.

Choices is wonderful read-aloud poem

About: A sonnet by Robert Stone Choices

Excellent sonnet - read it aloud to Mom and we enjoyed it very much. Thanks for sharing! It's a wonderful poem to be read aloud and savored together. It reminded us of the times when the late Donald Pedigo used to read Robert Frost poetry by the fireplace, after suppers, at home with two small families with children gathered round.
