Emergency Kit Supply Drive for Victims of Haiti Earthquake
January 21, 2010

A message from LWC Student Activities

Dear Friends, Faculty, Staff, and Students of Lindsey Wilson College and Campbellsville University,

As we all know, the country of Haiti has suffered another disaster in the past week. Over 70,000 are dead and even more are still missing. There is a great need for aid to this part of the world, and the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is asking for donations of emergency kits to send to Haiti for those who are left displaced and homeless by the earthquake that hit their country.

This Thursday, January 21, 2010 is the first of two Lindsey Wilson versus Campbellsville University games of this semester, and the Student Activities Board and Lindsey Wilson College Residence Life are asking the Lindsey and Campbellsville communities to bring items for donation to the game in order to help those who have been affected by this disaster. In addition to your help, Lindsey Wilson College will be donating part of the proceeds of the game to Haiti relief efforts.

Donation bins for the items will be at the entrance.

Happy birthday to Mr. Hinman, and a superb idea for Columbia

Mr. Hinman's story about Ice Cream is inspiration for an Adair County International Freeze Off ice cream celebration

About: Chuck Hinman IJMA 317:Ice Cream, Ice Cream

By Billy Joe Fudge

To Mr. Chuck Hinman via ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Happy Birthday, my friend. Although I have never met you, I believe I could pick you out of a crowd, and this story, as do all of your stories, evokes many memories of my childhood in the late 50's and early 60's.

We humans are really special creatures in that we can remember both the pains and the joys of the past, and although we remember the pains and the life lessons we learned from those painful experiences we can never once again be pained by them. However, the joys of the past have a special effect upon us every time we remember by bringing a smile to our faces and warmness to our hearts.

Big stories in little Birthday announcements, today

It's the little coincidences which make big stories in Birthdays.

Today, there's one about an Adair Countian in our hearts, Chuck Hinman, who writes the delightful "It's Just Me," and "It's Just Me Again" series which appear on Sundays in ColumbiaMagazine.com. We hope his readers will send a happy birthday by email to him at: charles.hinman@sbcglobal.net , wish him a Happy Birthday, and thank him for his wonderful, entertaining stories, and let him know which story was your favorite.. (The latest is: Ice Cream, Ice Cream)

And then, there's the case of Wallace and Gordon Willis Feese, two brothers born on the same day, nine years apart. How often does that happen?

Today, there is already a long list of very, very important Birthdays and In Memory Birthdays. If anyone has been overlooked, we can still add them today. Just use any Contact/Submit to send.

Praise for Gradyville, KY from afar

Pfc. Hayes found Eternal City a beautiful place, but no Gradyville, KY.-CM

By "Jim"

This note of praise from afar for Gradyville appeared in the October 4, 1944 Adair County News.
Visits Rome
Pfc. Noel Hayes, son of Mr. and Mrs. Z.A. Hayes, of Gradyville, has been overseas 18 months and is now in Italy. He writes that he has visited Rome several times and that it is a pretty city, but not as pretty as Gradyville...

Noel Hayes was the father of one son, the Dean of Adair County Journalists Paul B. Hayes, editor of the Adair Progress, and of two daughters, Susan Loy, President of Barger Insurance Agency, Columbia, KY, and Cathy Morris of Louisville, KY. -CM

100 years ago:
New keeper of the clock instructed to use standard time

Clock had been running on meridian time! Eighteen minutes slow. And shortest term Columbia Mayor, A.H. Ballard, must have misread the ballot and thought Joe Moore would be there to adjourn the meetings of City Council, back in January, 1909. And one item proves Columbians have always had a big heart when it comes to lost dogs. -CM

By "Jim"

My-oh-my, how news reporting has changed in a century. The following items made the front page of the Adair County News 100 years ago today (January 19, 1910.):
"Judge Moss has arranged with Mr. Frank Jackman to keep the city clock. It will run on standard time, and we have not a doubt but Mr. Jackman will give it due attention. Several years ago the Fiscal court made an order that standard time was to be kept by the city time keeper, but for the past year it has been running on meridian time."

Lichens are not moss although many have names which contain the word moss.

Lichens are not parasitic therefore they do not harm the trees. However, they are a fungi and fungi are not capable of making food so therefore most fungi are parasitic.
