Praise for Breeding Area Volunteer Fire Department

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I would like to say what an outstanding job to all the personnel that responded to Mrs. Grover, Tuesday night and Wednesday, but I would like to say a special "great job" to Breeding Area Volunteer Fire Department.

As a founding member of the department it is very near and dear to my heart. I know the dedication and long hard hours they put in to make their community a safer place to live. The Breeding Fire Departmentt. has come a long way in the short time they have been in service. "Way to go guys and keep up the good work."

Doug's List: Add EMTs, first responders

Doug's List

"They are awesome -KC
About: Ordinary people who give of themselvesbr and make Adair County a better place

By Kelly Crawhorn

I think Doug may have alluded to this, but can we add the emergency personnel and first responders?Last week, my young nephew wrecked flipping his car several times and landing top down in the construction area of 61 South.

The sheriff's department personnel and EMTs at the scene were so gracious and had such good attitudes. This was a scared young man and these people were very understanding, courteous, and dowright personable in making sure he was okay.

I am sure there are places where accidents happen frequently and the people involved are just another number. But to our guys and gals in Adair County, each person is a real human being with feelings and emotions that the emergency personnel respect.

They are awesome! -Kelly Crawhorn

Wonderful things happen in small towns

About: Kathy Keith recognizes 3 who were heroes Dec. 10, 2009

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Our Sunday School lesson last week was from the little book of Micah in the Old Testament where the prophet Micah foretold that the Messiah would be born in the little town of Bethlehem. We subtitled our lesson "Wonderful things can happen in small towns."In chapter 6 of that same little book, there is a verse that says, "He hath showed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?"Jesus said it another way, "Love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. (And) Love thy neighbor as thyself."When folks around here will go into cold water to help rescue a soul or go out on horseback to help a neighbor in trouble, they are "only" showing love like this.

Kathy Keith recognizes 3 who were heroes Dec. 10, 2009

"Angels" were David Abrell, and three who braved the cold, frigid to rescue driver: Kevin Spoon, Clayton Hadley (Junebug) and John Robinson.
Click on headline for story plus photo

By Kathy Keith

I would like to recognize an act of Heroism which occurred on Yellow Hammer RD, in the Fairplay community of Adair County, KY, on Thursday, December 10, 2009 when Hindman Munday's truck landed n a pond on Yellow Hammer Road belonging to Alvin Spoon.

David Abrell was the first to arrive on the scene and then 911 was called. But I wanted to recognize these heroes for stripping down and going in the water to rescue this elderly man. The heroes are Kevin Spoon, Clayton Hadley (Junebug) and John Robinson.

These guys were very brave to fight the cold frigid water and weather to rescue this man. These guys were Angels who appeared on the scene.I want to personally thank all these guys for this effort they made.

Doug's List: Updated

(Updated December 11, 2009)

An attitude of success exists here in Adair County now.
Doug McCammish started the list of the reason why, and asks others to add to it.

Doug McCammish's Starter list December 3, 2009.:
  • The ACHS Band. Wow! You can't ask for pride and success better than national TV on Thanksgiving.
  • The PRIDE effort and cleaning and keeping clean our city and county. Mr. Sinclair and the support he gets from Judge Melton and Mayor Bell and others is an exceptional asset. Visitors this past weekend commented on how clean the area is - and that's worth money.
  • Lindsey Wilson College athletic success (and national recognition), new buildings, new programs such as nursing, energy technology career academy, and more.
  • ACHS and middle school academic teams in state and national contests.
  • ACHS basketball and other athletic teams in district and state playoffs.
  • Kids (or anyone) who put forth effort to be the best will always get my vote.

  • Additions:

  • How very generous and compassionate the people of Adair Co. are. -Janet Hutcheson
  • The "ordinary" folks who jump in to help make this a better place. Doug McCammish
  • Adair County Ambulance Service and EMT's. They are awesome. Kelly Crawhorn
  • Adair County Little League Softball. Sandra Irvin
  • Adair County High School Cheerleaders for National Titles, being All-Americans. Sandra Irvin
  • Salvation Army Carring Volunteerswho ring the bells for Salvation Army Kettles and all the caring citizens making donations to our Salvation Army Christmas Kettles -Ellen Zornes

Obviously, these acts of human kindness and heroism belong on the Adair County Pride list. It is above and beyond the wonderful generosity that Janet Hutcheson added to the list - it is giving of themselves.
The "ordinary" folks who jump in to help make this a better place, not to mention all the trained volunteer firemen and women, search & rescue, dive team members, EMS, police, sheriff's officers, and other emergency personnel.

Dr. Smith asks about school building maintenance

About: My own opinion: Ralph Waggener on the tax

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Ralph, I understand your feelings and I'm not going into the for or against issue, but I do have a problem with the obvious negelect this building suffered. Are the other buildings in danger of becoming deteriorated into the same condition?

I just can't understand that we have an issue like this building and basically no knowledge of it except the need to tear down and rebuild. I sincerely hope that if this new building is built that proper funds are withheld in the budjet to maintain all of the structures of all the school buildings.
