Address Marker price: Why not leave well enough alone?

About: Chamber of Commerce announces 50% price increase on Address Markers

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Why did the Chamber of Commerce take a good idea and raise the price up. To my understanding this was started to help the 911 system to find your house easier in case of emergency.

With the prices going up, it going to make it harder for hard working people able to buy them. Why can't people leave a good idea well enough alone?

This is just one person's opinion, but i have to think that there will be others out there who would agree with me.

Whether you post this or not; I don't know but a least I got to voice my opinion to one person.

Thank you for your time,

s/Robert Horton

Thinks Chamber Address Marker price increase is Aug. 24

Re: Chamber of Commerce announces 50% price increase on Address Markers!

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

In the letter from Sue, the first date of the price change says August 24, and at the end of her note it says Sept. 24 - I believe this needs to be changed to Aug. 24th.

Thanks, Ed,

s/Amy

The note was printed verbatim. I think the intention was Aug. 24, 2009, as that was confirmed by the Sheriff's Department. That's the date the Sheriff's Department was given, too. -Ed Waggener

Chamber of Commerce announces
50% price increase on Address Markers!

From the Columbia-Adair County Tourism Commission to Ed
2:34 PM (32 minutes ago at 3:07pm posting time)

Ed,

Beginning August 24th the price of the address markers will be $15.00. Would you please write something for me and put on your website encouraging people they can get their address markers at the Sheriff's office for $10.00 from now until Sept 24th.

Sue

Note: The Chamber's announced price increase from $10 to $15 was confirmed by the Adair County's Sheriffi's office, and the date given them was confirmed as August 24, 2009. The Sheriff's Office was told the increase was based on materials going up. The Sheriff's Department emphasizes that they had nothing to do with the price increase, and may cease doing the work for the Chamber under these circumstances. An attempt to reach the Chamber of Commerce office got an answering machine, shortly after 3:00pmCT. The Adair County Sheriff's Department receives no compensation for doing the work, but has done it purely as a community service and to benefit the Chamber, which receives a small profit at $10.00 per marker. One sign company we contacted late Friday afternoon said that his company had had no price increases on the blue Address Markers like the ones used in Adair County since 2005. -Ed Waggener

Adair Co. Adult Learning Center offers fast track to GED diploma

More than 5000 Adair Countians over 18 and older are without High School Diplomas, but that number could drop dramatically with greater participation in the Adair County Adult Learning Center's GED High School diploma program.

Help is available at the Adair County Adult Learning Center. Prospective students who act now could qualify to take the GED test as early as Tuesday, August 25, 2009, after completing a required 12 hour orientation.

In Adair County, there's even help on the $50. testing fee. GED candidates pay only $10, with the rest coming from two local banks, the Bank of Columbia and First & Farmers National Bank. Hours have been extended at the center, making it more convenient for students to come by. "But if students are unable to come to us," Mary Ann Branham said, "we'll come to them."

The Adair County Adult Learning Center is open Monday through Thursday 8:00am- 4:00 pmCT. Fridays are for new students. Starting September 1, 2009 we will be staying open on Tuesday and Thursdays until 6:00 pmCT. Adair County Adult Learning Center, 403 Indian Drive, Columbia KY 42728. Phone (270) 384-4497

Appreciates response to Uptown Designs ad

    To ColumbiaMagazine.com

A person told me recently that he didn't have time to listen to the world news; he got his news from the Columbia Magazine Online. Everything he needed to know, he would find out here. That is a great compliment to Ed and the staff. So many people read the magazine and wait each day to see what is going on in the places they love best. I love writing for the paper and the feedback from the readers. I appreciate all of you who responded to my ad for my new screenprinting business in Edmonton and hope to continue being a part of the Columbia family.

    s/Carol Perkins

PS: Uptown Designs will be at the Third Sunday homecoming this weekend at Sulphur Well, KY

ACHS Boys beats Campbellsville, but Taylor one stroke better

Riley Grant and Jerrod Grider have 41s for JV team

By Steve Burton, ACHS Boys' Golf Coach

On Tuesday the ACHS Boy's Golf Team split a tri-match with Taylor County and Campbellsville. A trio of players, Charles Breeding, Madison Brashear, and Van Giles, led Adair County with rounds of 38. Alex Durham and Michael Waggener added support with rounds of 40. Colby Robertson carded a 41 to round out the scoring for the Varsity Team.

The 4 player total of 154 was good enough to best Campbellsville's 193 but, Taylor County edged Adair with a score of 153.

The Junior Varsity squad was led by Riley Grant and Jerrod Grider's rounds of 41. Coach Burton added that he was pleased with his team's effort, Taylor County was just a better team than us today. We definitely have a few areas that we need to improve in. However, I expect this group of boys to do just that.
