Storm Tues., Aug. 4, 2009: Damage mostly in 2 Columbia areas

Click on headline for story plus picture(s)

By Ed Waggener

Straight line winds which came through Adair County at around 3:00pm today, Tuesday, August 4, 2009, blew down trees, with first reports of damage coming in from a tight area of Columbia, plus one report from the Cane Valley Mill Road area.

A large tree fell across the beautiful old home of Dr. Ronald P. and Gail Rogers at 300 Jamestown ST. Other calls came from Myrtle Street and Maple Street on the Greater Lindsey Hill area, and from Heskamp Stret, and Tim Street on the Greater Jamestown Hill area.

Wally Burress first reported a visual sighting of the winds after driving in East 80 and seeing the winds from the Green Hills Road area. When he called, he had seen the big tree down at Dr. Rogers' home.

Louisville indeed a mess, Flat Woods, KY, resident writes

Lynn Darnell writes about: Flooding in Louisville KY tough on Knifley boy
I am in Louisville right now, and it is indeed a mess. They are evacuating U of L, horses from Church Hill Downs, Animal Shelters and still doing emergency rescues. It has started to rain again and they are expecting more flooding. All I can say is if you don't have to be in Louisville, don't come here! -Lynne Darnell, at 1:37pmCT, Tuesday, August 4, 2009

Buy local and save big. $20 buys a lot at Adair Farmers Market

This morning, this careful shopper not only got the best value for her dollar, she also got smiles all around and a flower, free, from Myra Harrison. 'All I need to do is bake up a skillet of corn bread and there will be good eatin' at Tucker's Station tonight,' Barbara says

Growing a big vegetable garden is not for everyone - sometimes it's nice to let someone else do the work for you. You can still save money on your groceries, choose from the freshest fruits and vegetables and support our local community by shopping at the Farmer's Market.

Tuesday and Friday mornings you can usually find me at the Adair County Farmer's Market. This morning I thought that I would base my purchases on "getting the best value for my money" just to see how far I could stretch my dollar.

Money and reusable shopping bags in hand I began. On the outside I may appear to be scatterbrained but I have a method - I like to do a walk through first to check things out before I make any purchases. I look for vegetables that look fresh and are ready to eat. I compare the prices as well as the quantities of each vegetable available. I also admit that I like to buy from a friendly face.

Remember that prices tend to go done when there is a surplus and up when there is a shortage so look for your best deals when the season is at its peak.

With $20.00 to spend this morning I made my selections. Here's what I bought:
  • 1 watermelon. I know this one will be delicious because I "thumped" it just like my Pop did and it has a nice hollow sound
  • 2 cantaloupes, I only intended to buy one but this guy was a great salesperson
  • 14 ears of Bodacious corn, I just like the name
  • 1 head of cabbage for Wayne who has been craving fried cabbage
  • A mess of green beans, only a southern woman knows how many beans are in a "mess"
  • 5 cucumbers, the burpless variety
  • 12 tomatoes, I saved money here by opting to buy the tomatoes that were slightly imperfect
  • 18 apples, I mixed two varieties so that I will have some for eating and some for cooking
  • Last but certainly not least 1 Zinnia, Myra Harrison kindly presented us all a flower and a smile this morning
All I need to do is bake up a skillet of corn bread and there will be good eatin' at Tucker's Station tonight.

The Adair County Farmers Market is open on Tuesday and Friday mornings from 6am to 10amCT, 409 Fairground ST, Columbia, KY

Catwalks have worked well other places

Maury Lewis writes concerning suggestion:Mark Hale: An elevated catwalk for the courthouse
I have seen this idea work really well over a four lane highway in Gulf Breeze Florida. Gulf Breeze High School is on one side of the road and a parking lot and football stadium are on the other side,so they built a covered concrete catwak with openings in the sides for wind to pass through. It has taken some high winds from huricanes and has done really well. Just something else to ponder HMM. -Maury

Applauds CJE for advance at Adair County 911

John Halsey writes about: http://www.columbiamagazine.com/index.php?sid=31126>Adair 911 has own weather radar satellite service
A great asset indeed. Ann and whoever else was involved in the go-ahead deserve a loud, clear and strong Atta-Boy (Girl).

It would really be tremendous if the info and screens could be uploaded on the county site or a service like wunderground.com so we could all have access.

As it is, the closest sites are in Campbellsville, Greensburg, Yosemite or Jamestown. -John Halsey

Homeplace on Green River is about preservation

Written on reading: Johnnietta Janes would like early photos of Breeding

By Billy Joe Fudge

I would like to take the opportunity to tell folks that the Homeplace On Green River located over in the edge of Taylor County is not only a working farm and a heritage farm but a place for the folks of Adair County, Green County, Taylor County, and South Central Kentucky to preserve many of the artifacts and much of the history of our rural culture.

by Ed Waggener

A DTN Meterologix Weather Tracking Satellite system was installed yesterday, Monday, August 3, 2009, at the Adair 911 Center at 107 N. High Street, Columbia, KY.

The system, which gives the 911 Center stand alone, on site weather tracking, was operational yesterday afternoon.

The installation marks the last key component of the major basic 911 Center needs, Adair County Judge Ann Melton said, as she watched the installation with 911 Coordinator Mary Allender.

Thanks to the Columbia Volunteer Fire Department

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Sincere thanks to the Columbia Volunteer Fire Department for helping beyond the call of duty early this morning when a sprinkler head broke at the McCammish factory. Without their help cutting off the water and moving furniture, I'm sure the damage would have been worse.

Interested in Karst topography, speleology

Charles Marshburn writes about: Save the Courthouse Comment Make entrance to cave
I find the subject of Karst topography fascinating and would appreciate any information on the cave under the square. Are the dimensions of the cave known? How was the cave discovered? Who has specific knowledge about the cave?
I'd check the Adair County Public Library, 307 Greensburg ST, Columbia, KY. They can help. Or drive over to The Bookstore in Horse Cave, KY. They may not be cave experts, but they can sell you books on caves and direct you to cave experts.

Mark Hale: An elevated catwalk for the courthouse

Says that's his 2 cents worth. That and Bring back the whittlers
See also: "Save the Courthouse Tour: Better Pedestrian approaches a must" photo by Linda Waggener

By Mark Hale, Village of Hard Scratch, KY correspondent

It would be pretty neat to have an elevated catwalk or breezeway go from the anex 2nd floor to the balcony on the north side of the courthouse.

An entrance could be put in there and that would fix the pedestrian issue as well as make for an attractive addition to the square It could be made well above the clearance requirements for traffic and be safe for the walkers as well.

Since everyone is thinking of stuff to do thats my 2 cents worth: A $250,000 catwalk.

Johnnietta Janes would like early photos of Breeding

Johnnietta Janes responds Richard Robertson's letter: Wants more on Cane Valley/Coburg/Dulworth and Egypt/Jericho/Bull Run
Thank you (Richard Robertson) for your comments. I was raised in Breeding and my mom told me about some of the places of business that used to be there. At one time there was a grist mill and a blacksmith shop. I wish I could find some pictures of these. How will our children and grandchildren know about their heritage if we don't preserve it somehow? The same is true of the courthouse, it is part of our heritage as Adair Countians. Johnnietta Johnson
