Adair 911 has own weather radar satellite Click on headline for full story, photo(s) by Ed Waggener A DTN Meterologix Weather Tracking Satellite system was installed yesterday, Monday, August 3, 2009, at the Adair 911 Center at 107 N. High Street, Columbia, KY. The system, which gives the 911 Center stand alone, on site weather tracking, was operational yesterday afternoon. The installation marks the last key component of the major basic 911 Center needs, Adair County Judge Ann Melton said, as she watched the installation with 911 Coordinator Mary Allender. The last element is NCIC, National Crime Information Center service, some of whose funding may come from the City of Columbia, with the county seeking Federal grants for the rest. A DTN dish was installed by Justin Bailey, 911 Assistant Coordinator, and 911 Dispatcher Billy Nobles, with the assistance of Bradley Caldwell at the helm of Columbia Fire Department Ladder One. The DTN Meteorlogix system will be a feed through DTN directly from the National Weather Service. It's a system is leased from DTN at an annual cost of about $2,500 a year, Bailey said. At that price, he said, it is customer installed, and that is the reason it was handled by local technicians. As a stand alone operation, the DTN radar tracking does not interfere with any other 911 operation, Bailey said. The center will be able to spot thunderstorms, rotations indicating tornadoes, hail, and other weather conditions and will know speed and direction of storm systems. It can mean, in the future, that the 911 Center can issue Call 1 alerts to specific communities and neighborhoods, should County Judge Ann Melton or Adair County Emergency Disaster Coordinator Greg Thomas declare a need to do so.Ladder One was provided for the installation at no charge to the county, Assistant Coordinator Bailey said. "We want to publicly thank the Columbia Fire Department for their help," he said. This story was posted on 2009-08-04 07:50:17
