Birds of KY: Gulls at Green River Plaza

2009-01-19 - Green River Plaza, Campbellsville, KY - Photo by George Rice, Egypt, Adair County, KY.
George Rice took these photos on Sunday, January 18, 2009, at the Green River Plaza shopping center on KY 210 in Campbellsville, and writes, "Sea gulls were not common birds of Adair County until Green River Lake and shopping centers appeared and then the sea gulls came. They are a beautiful, graceful bird of different collors, gray, white with black markings and sometimes, speckled with all the collors.Gulls are ground nesting birds, but are always found in the general areas of water. Gulls are highly intelligent and co-exist with humans. There are numerous species of gulls, Heerman's Gulls, Common Gulls or Mew Gulls, Herring Gulls,Glaucous Gulls and Western Gulls. The Common Gull that we see can be found in Europe, Asia and the United States. They feel on crabs, cray fish, small fish and anything left in the parking lot. The boy in the picture on the right is Alex Lee from Greensburg, KY, who was feeding the gulls--but they wouldn't come up while he was feeding them." Proud father sends special thank you to Adair Ambulance Service

I want to send a thank you to three members of the Adair County Ambulance Service. Robin Spoon, Lee Powell, and Rick Wilson delivered my daughter on the side of KY 55 in Taylor County while en-route to Taylor Regional Hospital.

Robin and Lee, assisted by Rick, did an exceptional job assisting us in this time of need.

I think our county should be proud of the fact that we have such exceptional emergency medical personnel working for the ambulance service.

Writer thinks more signs needed before more lights

Travelers from out-of-area confused; thinks most dangerous place is at CWB/KY 55 South, on Jamestown Road, where northbound drivers pop around curve at too high a speed, north bound turns off CWB have to cross two lanes of traffic
About: "Letter Detailed thoughtful suggestions on KY 439CWB issues"

Mr. Waggener,

I very much agree with Mrs. Peasley's idea of more signs for the by-pass.

Warning signs for the intersections would be a good start instead of more stop lights.

Letter: Detailed, thoughtful suggestions on KY 439/CWB issues

About: "Preemptive action needed to prevent further tragedy"

Ed,

My sympathies to all those who have had accidents at the intersection of the by-pass! We expected it to be a good thing, time saving, and make less traffic through town--not causing injuries--though accidents do happen sometimes.

I am so sorry that this intersection has been so problematic. I don't pretend to know how to solve this, but I am in agreement that loss of lives and injuries should be minimized. I have been trying to think what might be happening in folks minds where they are somehow missing the stop sign.

Feedback: Wants speeding enforcement on KY 704

About: Letter Kentucky should impose rules on police speeding

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I agree with the writer in general, but if the officers did not speed on KY 704 between Spoon's store and the intersection at KY 55, they would most likely be tailgated! Would love to see some lights and hear some sirens in this stretch of road.

s/Charles Marshburn

You've hit on the worst driving habit in Adair County, KY: Tailgating. Those of us with military training remember the lesson we learned from maintaining an interval, which, to my way of thinking is even more important than the speed of travel. -EW

Feedback: Not another law; enforce ones we've got equally

About: Letter Kentucky should impose rules on police speeding

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

It is so sad that people think everytime someone commits a wrong doing that we need to pass another law.

There already is a law in Kentucky that states anyone (including police) breaking the speed limit must have their emergency equipment in operation (ie: lights and siren).

Feedback: Preemptive action needed to prevent further tragedy

KY 439/Columbia Western Bypass intersection is catastrophe waiting to happen. The very least action would be to install caution light/stop light
About: "Writer says better idea is to block access to bypass from KY 439"

Hey Ed,

Mr. Owens is correct. This is a catastrophe waiting to happen. However, I disagree with his reasoning concerning not putting a traffic signal at this intersection. The inconvenience of one stop on the WB pales in comparison to needlessly endangering the lives of our citizens.

Feedback: Tv camera at intersection could record behaviors

About: "Writer says better idea is to block access to bypass from KY 439"

To ColumbiaMagazine.com

Maybe like the big cities they should install some type of cameras at the intersection and then repaly the accident and see who is at fault and why this happened...Then you would know what to do to prevent this from happening in the future. Just a thought....
