Snow outlines cat's bridge over Town Creek

2009-01-19 - Downtown Columbia - Photo by Linda Waggener.
This morning's light snow outlined the old Catalpa tree limb that neighborhood cat's use for a bridge at the corner of Town Creek and Fortune Street. The ancient tree leans a few more inches over the little creek every time the water gets high enough to loosen another root or two from its base. At this handy level, cats can sit silently on it and watch for minnows and birds to pause unknowingly before getting trounced. The Catalpa tree, whether used by animals or by children enjoying a climb, reminds me of the book, The Giving Tree, Shel Silverstein's fable about giving deeply, consistently, and taking, without thought or giving credit or conscious thought. John Walker Perry, Junior Walker build Conestoga model

2009-01-19 - Flat Woods, District 4, Adair County, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
JOHN WALKER PERRY displayed a model Conestoga wagon he and his Grandfather, Junior Walker, built together. John Walker Perry is an eighth grader at Adair County Middle School. He is the son of Donnie and Cindy Perry. The model was built from memories of covered wagons, without any formal plans. Junior Walker said he once had a covered wagon, which he used in parades, and which were pulled by a team of oxen he owned. The wagon has most of the features of old time Conestogas. The model led some of the regulars at Flatwoods store to remember days when every family in the area had wagons, with some families as loyal to brands such as Studebaker, Owensboro, and Florence brands as folks are to car brands today. They did note that the boxes or beds of the wagons aren't as spacious as movies sometimes make them appear to be. Standard width inside was 42". The coupling poles could be of various lengths, allowing for stretched wheelbases of 10-15 feets. The stays for the canvas top in the model are made of stiff insulated electrical wiring. In theold models, stays were mostly made of hickory or white oak. The steel tires on this model are welded, just as they were on the real covered wagons. A Today Feature photo

Birds of KY: Gulls at Green River Plaza

2009-01-19 - Green River Plaza, Campbellsville, KY - Photo by George Rice, Egypt, Adair County, KY.
George Rice took these photos on Sunday, January 18, 2009, at the Green River Plaza shopping center on KY 210 in Campbellsville, and writes, "Sea gulls were not common birds of Adair County until Green River Lake and shopping centers appeared and then the sea gulls came. They are a beautiful, graceful bird of different collors, gray, white with black markings and sometimes, speckled with all the collors.Gulls are ground nesting birds, but are always found in the general areas of water. Gulls are highly intelligent and co-exist with humans. There are numerous species of gulls, Heerman's Gulls, Common Gulls or Mew Gulls, Herring Gulls,Glaucous Gulls and Western Gulls. The Common Gull that we see can be found in Europe, Asia and the United States. They feel on crabs, cray fish, small fish and anything left in the parking lot. The boy in the picture on the right is Alex Lee from Greensburg, KY, who was feeding the gulls--but they wouldn't come up while he was feeding them."
