Memories of when Columbia was the coldest place in America

It was 60ish, and for BJ Fudge it conjures up reminders of days at Breeding Grade School and later, Sparksville Elementary School, where the marvels of modern plumbing made school more bearable. Reflections of Early days in Southern Adair County on reading: Charles Marshburn letter "Global Warming began in Great Falls, Montana, in July, 1969?"

By Billy Joe Fudge

I don't remember the exact year that Columbia was the coldest place in the nation although I believe it to be '60ish.

I was around age 10 and attending Breeding Grade School.

Feedback: Another question on school being held today

About: "Questions school being held today"

To ColumbiaMagazine.com

I have to agree. I don't understand with the temperatures at zero and the wind chill below zero why Adair County Schools did not cancel or at least delay school.

We liked to have never gotten our daughters car started and thawed this morning for her to get to school.

Global Warming began in Great Falls, Montana, in July, 1969?

Swing in temperature in 7 months was 149 degrees (F.) between December 68 and July 1969

To ColumbiaMagazine.com

In December of 1968 I was in the Air Force in Great Falls, Montana. The temperature fell to 43 degrees below zero two nights in a row. Just so happens I cooked deer steaks both nights on my grill positioned outside my picture window.

Of course I did it just to be able to say I did. The next July the temperature reached 106 in Great Falls. I suppose that was the beginning of global warming. If my memory serves, I think the temperature stayed below freezing for twenty some days in a row and zero sounded warm.

Questions school being held today

To ColumbiaMagazine.com

Why is Adair County having school with the temperatures like they are?

With Russell County not having school, I thought that Adair was going along with them when they called school off. I sure hope Mr Treece does not have to wait on a bus this morning!
