About: "Fairplay historian offers new knowledge for In-from-Outters"

To ColumbiaMagazine.com

Thank you, Chris Bennett, for the history lesson! I killed my copperhead this summer with my bush hog in Fair Play Community on my farm. I have never had any moonshine whiskey, but am glad to know it might help with snakebite. I had better stay on my tractor!

Wednesday morning collision is 3rd at the intersection since Columbia Western Bypass opened at 3:00pmCT, October 9, 2008, just three months ago. Links below. -CM
UPDATE at 5:02pmCT, January 14, 2009: Chief Mark Harris of the Columbia Police Department says this is the fourth accident at the intersection. "We've worked three," he said, "and today we called in the Kentucky State Police because they have reconstructionist and because we thought they had resources to handle the accident. Chief Harris said that after the 3rd accident, he, Mayor Patrick R. Bell, and a representative of the Somerset office of the Kentucky Highway Department visited the site and the KHD subsequently put in rumble strips to warn KY 439 and KY 61 traffic of the stop. "Today's crash is the first since the rumble strips," he said, "but I think the State needs to put a caution light or even a four way traffic light in there."

I have always been proud to say that I was from Fairplay--being raised about 1/10th of a mile from downtown Fairplay and being the niece of long-serving mayor, Amon Spoon--Fairplay has always been and will always be a special place to me.

Birding: Reader says Weed flyover is of Sandhill Cranes

Splains how geese and cranes go; some morphology

Hey Ed,

I haven't had time to look closely and research the photo of geese but I believe them to be Sandhill Cranes. Necks and legsare too long.

Verbally geese honk and cranes gargle.

Also, here's how to tell a duck: A duck's legs are attached in the middle of it's body. Looks balanced. A goose's legs are attached on the back of their bodies. That's why geese, when standing appear to be standing more straight up, like Penguins and humans, and a duck kindly waddles.

Billy Joe Fudge

As one who takes birdology seriously, "Thanks." I was never sure how a goose goes. Glad to have the information. Of all the things I learned at Columbia Grade Center, it was the answer to the ornithological question, : How do you tell a duck? And the answer, which is different from Billy Joe Fudges and which drew gales of eighth grade laughter for the thousandth time in that year and forever after, was Tennis shoes because motorcycles don't have no doors.. I'm not sure who brought this wisdom to our class. I think the question came to us by either Blackie Nixon or Darrell Young. For year's, even today, this shibboleth authenticates membership in that wonderful CGS class of 1954. -EW

Letter: Damon is a very special young man

About: A story of a haircut and of a great kid (Damon Honaker)

Dear Ed:
I was so glad to see the pictures of Damon and his story posted for everyone in our community to see. He is a very special young man, and we at Trinity are so proud of him! Even though a lot of us womenfolk at church will miss seeing those long, blonde, beautiful curls, he probably won't miss us admiring his hair every Sunday and Wednesday night!! :) He and his family are a blessing to all of us, and we're so happy to have them as part of our church family.

Thanks!
Angie Murrell

Looking Ahead: Says restaurants come because of income level

For wet/moist, but thinks that has little to do with whether nice restaurants come or not. With this wet/moist vote, survey is now 26 % stay dry; 74% for wet/moist

To ColumbiaMagazine.com
There is one particular article on here that suggest the only way we, "Columbia" can have nice restaurants such as Rafferty's, Red Lobster, O'Charleys, etc, is by making our city wet.

In fact this is not true at all.
