Birds of Kentucky: A Long Run flotilla of geese

2009-01-14 - Jefferson Co., KY - Photo by Pen.
In a show of naval power this 10-goose flotilla produced squawk and awe on a recent winter day in Long Run Park. The photographer has gotten many a talking to by the geese, but has never come under physical attack, he says. However, members of this territorial species do occasionally flog intruders in nesting season. Best, CM thinks, to be prepared in case of a goose attack. See e-How's How to Stop a Goose Attack, which basically says to steer clear, maintain eye contact, show no fear, and escape through and close a gate. The article says that airpower of geese is inferior, and they rarely fly over fences in offensive pursuit. The article also refers to responses to the twin perils--most of us have experienced them both at the same time--of bear attacks and chicken attacks. This is not the idle talk of fearmonger. Most of the kids who grew up on Jamestown Hill were attacked by the fractious giant rooster which fed at Mr. E. Campbell's garbage disposal site and made life hell for small boys under eight on a milk, flour, and eggs mission to Columbia Super Market. Those of contrary notionality are welcome to argue their side using any of the Comment/Submit buttons. A Today Feature photograph
