Big Tree at Vester a monument to early conservationist

The late Sam Loren Burton protected the tree, as do its present owners, his granddaughter Billie Kay and her husband Terry Farris. The tree was around when Adair Co. was organized, maybe when U.S. founded.

By Ed Waggener

The Big Tree at Mile Marker 5 on KY 206 at Vester is a very special Adair County landmark.

The huge white oak is a treasure for Adair Countians, not only because of its majesty and history, but also because it lives today as a monument to a man who may have been Adair County's earliest true conservationists: the late Sam Loren Burton.

"He knew the tree was special," his granddaughter, Billie Kay Farris, remembers. "He was the tree's guardian," she said.

Big Tree at Mile Marker 5 is older than Adair County

2008-03-30 - KY 206, at 5 Mile Marker, Vester Community, Adair Co., KY - Photo By Ed Waggener.
MORE ISSUES HAVE BEEN SETTLED IN ADAIR COUNTY under the Big Tree on KY 206 at Mile Marker 5, in the Vester Community, than have been settled in Circuit Court, according to old timers. It was once the main place to congregate in the Vester community. Houses and barns in the foreground are on the Z.H. Burton farm on Bull Run Lane.

Just About the Smartest Dog of All Times: Old Raymond

(ADV) What's Cooking in Adair County today:
Scroll down to "Today, Sunday, March 30, 2008," to see what's cooking today in Adair County (ADV)

This article first appeared in the last century in issue 17 of Columbia! Magazine, the old timey print precursor to the modern age ColumbiaMagazine.com, and was written by Ed Waggener.

The full title appeared as: After a long walk up Old Springfield Road to Campbellsville and back, Hunter Fisher knew he had a friend at the end of the trail. It was about one of the smartest dogs ever in Adair County, and for sure the smartest ever in District Six of Adair County.

His name was Old Raymond. His master could call home when he got to Springfield Pike, a little above Happy Hollow, and get Old Raymond on the telephone in Jericho, tell Old Raymond where the cattle where, and Old Raymond would come and take them home. WE ALL LIVE IN A FOREST: 1) How to be your own tree research scientist. 2) Treeiffic information about the economically, environmentally important black walnut tree
This is Series Column #3. For Series Column #2, Click here

By Billy Joe Fudge

Yes, we all live in the forest. I am 100% sure of it. I have proved it over and over and because I am in my "education" mode, I am going to give you an experiment as a homework assignment so you can prove it for yourself.

This will be the easiest, least labor intensive homework with which you will ever be involved. In fact it will be a labor saver for many of you. For many others it will be a money saver.
