Redbuds getting ready for their month

2008-03-30 - Wolf Creek Dam - Photo By Ed Waggener.
APRIL IS REDBUD MONTH in the South and Eastern Kentucky Tourism Development Area, including Adair and Russell Counties. They're ready at Wolf Creek Dam, already brightening cool end of March Spring Days, as these were Saturday, March 29, 2008. The view is from the southeast side of the dam. The lake level is back up to 690 feet, and use of the new, and much bigger Halcomb's Landing Boat Ramp appears to be at high levels.

Birds of Kentucky: Another Duck, this one preening

    2008-03-30 - Kentucky - Photo By Pen.
PEN PHOTOGRAPHED THIS DUCK on a recent outing. He entitled it "Another Duck," but the spectacular colors make this duck more than just another one. It seems to know it too, doing its best to maintain its duckly beauty with some sincere preening. See other Pen photographs in the ColumbiaMagazine.com group at Flickr

Carrie McQueary Photo from Past: Casey Crk. Bridge Dedication

2008-03-30 - Casey Creek, District 6, Adair County, KY - Photo From the Russell family collection.
CARRIE McQUEARY sent this great old photograph many details, but asks readers to add to the what she wrote when she sent the photograph,"This is a photo from theRussell family collection. The writing on the back states that it is the Casey Creek bridge dedication, taken in 1952. This photo came from the late T.J. and Okla Russell collection. We only have the name of one person in the photo. That person is named on the back as Ora Mae Arnold, and is supposed to be the woman at the end of the flatbed. The car in the middle of the picture, parked directly behind the old pickup was my great grandfather, T.J. Russell'scar,a blue 1949 Chevrolet. My mother, LouAnn Russell, says that her grandmother Okla Russell said that it was a big event then and the Governor was there for the dedication. Any more information would be great! Thanks, Carrie McQueary." On Monday, March 31, 2008, Bill Conn identified the governor on the platform as Gov. A.B. Chandler. The man on the right in the white hat was his uncle, Herb Taylor." Another note: The "Durham" truck was a Durham Wholesale Co. truck. The firm is now merged with Columbia Candy Co. and is owned by Danny Waggener. The band members are from Columbia High School. Their director, Myron Cohen, can be seen to the right of the front of the Durham truck.
