Only 1 precinct worker, a Democrat for Gradyville, yet needed

Adair County Court Clerk Sheila Blair has filled positions publicized earlier in ColumbiaMagazine.com, and now needs only a Democrat for the Gradyville precinct for the Tuesday, November 6, 2007, general election.

Workers hired include two Republicans for Milltown, one (of two needed) Democrats for Gradyville-Nell, and a Republican worker for Knifley-Roley.

She e-mailed the news a few minutes ago, saying, "Any person wanting to work can contact the Adair County Court Clerk's office at (270) 384-2801 or (270) 384-4007," and added, "The person does not need to live in the precinct to be eligible to work."

Donald E. Doss added to veterans list

Gerald Doss wrote: "My brother, Donald E Doss, was in the military from November 1955 for 3 years. He was a civilian for 2 years and then re-enlisted, serving total of 7 years. He is now in the nursing home. He served in Germany, Turkey."

Adair firefighters contain fire on Mackie Spoon RD, Sunday

The Adair County Fire Department responded to a storage building on fire Sunday September 30. 2007, at 9:45 am, located on Mackie Spoon Road off of Hwy 768 off of Hwy 704.

The building sustained moderate damage.

Lyle Turner, on Baton Death March, WWII, added to list

Rick Caldwell wrote: "I would like to add my great uncle to the list. He served during WWII and was on the Baton Death March in the Philippines and it really messed him up for the rest of his life. As a young boy he used to tell me storys about it. His name is Lyle Turner the brother of my Grandmother Bietrice Caldwell."The name is now added. Obituary: Joel Scott Stephens, 39

Mr. Stephens was a member of Liberty Baptist Church in Russell County. He was a construction worker, a U.S. Army veteran, and was formerly a resident of Adair County, KY

Joel Scott Stephens, Russell Springs, KY, died Sunday, September 30, 2007, at Markey Cancer Center, Indianapolis, IN.

He was born December 4, 1967, the son of Marshall Marvin Stephens and Carol Elaine Rogers Stephens, Russell Springs, KY, who survive.

Besides his parents, he is survived by two children, Rachel Elaine Stephens and Joshua Luke Stephens, both of Columbia, KY, and the following:

Obituary: Vola Harvey, 79, dies in Bowling Green, KY

Vola Harvey was a member of a large, respected South Adair County merchant family; she remained a member of Sparksville Baptist Church and will be buried in Adair County

Vola Harvey, 79, Bowling Green, KY, formerly of the Sparksville Community in Adair County, passed away Sunday, September 30, 2007.

The funeral service will be Friday, October 5, 2007, at 10:00amCT at J.C. Kirby & Son Lovers Lane Chapel, 820 Lovers Lane, in Bowling Green, KY. Interment will be in Fudge Cemetery at Breeding (Adair County) on Friday, October 5, 2007 at approximately 12:30pmCT.

Kitchen fire quickly extinguished

The Columbia Fire Department responded to a kitchen fire at 303 Center Street at 12:10pm on Monday, October 1, 2007,to the Rick Huckaby residence.

The stove fire had been extinguished, and there was no damage.

Nominations for SCC Board of Directors being accepted

Applications for nomination to the Somerset Community College Board of Directors are now being accepted. Information from all applicants will be presented to the Somerset Community College Nominating Commission for their meeting on October 18, 2007. The commission will nominate applicants for two expired seats on the board.

GAS PRICES: Gerald Doss says cost still 15 higher in Columbia

I just checked kygasprices, and again everywhere around us prices are about 15 cents a gallon less than here in Columbia.

I am still trying to figure out who is doing that to us. No luck yet but I will find out. I am having a lot of calls of encouragement.

Adair jobless rate down for Aug. 2007, but higher than year ago

Adair County's unemployment rate improved for August, 2007 to 6.0% from the July 2007 6.6% rate, but was still much higher than August, 2007's 5.9%.

Adair County's unemployment was worse than Clinton, Casey, Pulaski, Russell and Cumberland Counties, in tha order, for the month of August, but was better than the jobless figures for Taylor, Wayne, Green, and McCreary Counties.

ACRD maintenance schedule, Monday, October 1, 2007

The Adair County Road Department will be ditching on Carter Keltner in District 5, and conducting the following operations:
  • Mowing the roadsides in District 5 with bushhog and boom mower.
  • Picking trash on Hwy 551.
Please use caution when driving in these areas, and be prepared for sudden stops. Thanks and have a good day.

This time, Road Eighty east of Columbia is really closed.

Joe Hare was out early to record Adair County history. The closing, for approximately four months, of KY East 80 at the first Russell Creek Bridge in Columbia, KY.

After first announcing that the road would be closed last Monday, September 25, 207, the date of the start was delayed one week, until this morning. This time, the KHD meant business. The closure finality came at exactly 6:44amCT, no mistake, when the last blockade was erected.

Adair County Band Reserve Grand Champion at Danville

In preliminaries, Director Tim Allen's Adair County Band wins First Place in AAA, best percussion AAA, best colorguard AAA; also best overall percussion in finals. Link to bandsite follows

The Adair County Band received first place in class AAA, best percussion in class AAA, and best colorguard in class AAA during the preliminary competition at the Boyle County Marching Band Contest.

Road 80 East bridge closed starting today

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is closing KY 80 (Columbia-Russell Springs Road) at M.P. 13.5 in Adair County to through traffic beginning today, Monday, October 1, 2007.

This closure will be necessary for replacement of a bridge over Russell Creek (located approximately 1.2 miles east of the southeast junction to KY 55).

Garden Club topic is seed balls


EVENTS

Gardeners of all types and skill levels are invited to attend the next meeting of the Garden Club on Thursday October 25. 2007 at 1:00 pmCT. The meeting will be held at the home of Billie Farris on KY 206, Liberty Road, near Brown's store.

The project for the month is "Seed Balls," Bring any leftover seeds you have or seeds from this years harvest and $2.00 to cover the cost of supplies. We will be sharing seeds and making seed balls for planting in the spring. Call Barbara Armitage 270.250.2979 for directions or information.

The Westlake Regional Hospital Auxiliary will have a Book Fair, Monday, October 1, and Tuesday, October 2, 2007, in the lobby of the hospital.
