Payroll tax passes for three-fourths percent

Adair County Fiscal Court passed a three-fourths of one percent payroll tax at the May 23, 2023 regular meeting. This is the first step. Next, an ordinance will be written by the County Attorney and a second reading and vote will make it final.

At the start of the year, new County Judge Executive Larry Russell Bryant had asked for a one percent payroll tax but that failed. At the first May meeting, Magistrate Daryl Flatt proposed a one-fourth-percent tax but that also failed.

The motion for the compromise amount was made by Magistrate Terry Hadley and seconded by Magistrate Sammy Baker. Voting yes were Hadley, Baker, Bryant and Magistrate Chris Reeder. Voting no were Magistrates Flatt, Tony Denton and Billy Coffey. Magistrate Mark Humphress was absent.
