Motorists are strongly encouraged to be on guard for traffic shifts onto the newly constructed roadway. Artist in the dust revealed: Kellis Booth did it!

Comments re photo 45842 Art Lines drawn in the dust

By Sandy Coomer

My son Jordan Coomer was at the Cafe on the Square when this was drawn.

Kellis at the Cafe drew this while he was hanging out at the Cafe. It has been very popular. Several people have commented and taken pictures of my dirty van.

I hate to see it get washed off. Chances are it will be there until we have a good rain. So everyone can watch for the Adair County Courthouse riding around in the dirt.

The van belongs to Johnny Morgan. - Sandy Coomer

Thanks! Sandy Coomer, for this great news: Just wonder where the talented Mr. Booth keeps all his hats: He a co-owner of the Cafe, He's a minister and will be hosting the big multi-church July 4 picnic at Jim Blair Park tomorrow, and now we know he's brought a whole new genre of public art to Columbia! Wouldn't surpise me to learn of other hidden talents.

Jon Halsey: City would save on flags with better buying

Has idea for savings which might be enough to offset the soon to be non-existent County owned hospital that we will be paying for over the next 20-30 years

Jon Halsey writes:
I have been buying Annin Mfg. American Flags for years and I have never paid the price that the City seems to think is o.k.

A quick scan of Amazon, Walmart and Lowes shows a large variety of American Flags for sale.

Amazon's flags include the following:
- 2.5x4 Cotton (outdoor) $9.69
- 3x5 (Flag and all components American made) embroidered stars and sewn stripes, poly/cotton with strong canvas header $5.49 (for outdoor use)
Walmart offerings:
- Annin 3x5 dyed stars and stripes, nylon $13.97
Lowe's
- 3x5 $11.24
- 2.5x4 $9.98
One begins to wonder if a good, part-time, combined City/County Purchasing Agent (with a charter to justify why local wasn't an option) couldn't pay for her/himself and still return a profit for the taxpayers. Maybe even enough to offset part of the soon to be non-existent County owned hospital that we will be paying for over the next 20-30 years.

State property tax rate remains set at 12.2 cents for 2012

By Cindy Lanham
News from Commonwealth News Service

FRANKFORT, KY (July 2, 2012) - The Kentucky Department of Revenue has set the 2012 State Real Property Tax Rate at 12.2 cents per $100 of assessed value. Kentucky Revised Statute 132.020 requires the Department of Revenue to set the real property rate no later than July 1 of each year.

This rate is based on the revenue generated from the increase in taxable real property assessments from 2011 to 2012. If the increase in revenue is more than four percent after the exclusion of new property added to the tax roll during 2012, then the prior year rate must be reduced. Because the assessment increase for 2012 is estimated at 1.03 percent, the state rate will remain the same as the 2011 rate, 12.2 cents per $100 of assessed value. The rate has remained unchanged since 2008.

All of the revenue generated from the state property tax rate will go into the state's General Fund. - Cindy Lanham

National Weather Service site has new look

The National Weather Service website has better look this morning - and along with it some better weather, at least as far as the heat and drought is concerned. The high today is only 93. And there are some chances of rain, albeit in the form of thunderstorms.

Columbia received a little dust-setting sprinkle last night, enough to interrupt the City Council meeting with a call to open the windows to see the spectacle of life giving rain once again.

Although the CM weather always carries quick links to the Mesonet Weather Stations in the 7-County area, and links to Hazardous Weather with a brief from the National Weather Service, those in a hurry to see the new National Weather Service site should click to: National Weather Service, right now. -CM

Kentucky Color - Big Tooth Aspen

Adair County and 2-3 county area in North Carolina Smoky Mountains are southern most reaches of tree
Click on headline for complete essay, photo(s)

By Billy Joe Fudge, Retired District Forester
Kentucky Division of Forestry

I figure that probably not more than a couple hundred Adair County residents would know that Adair County is part of the natural range of Big Toothed Aspen. In fact with the exception of only a small two or three county area in the North Carolina Smoky Mountains, Adair County is one of the most southern natural sites for this tree.

South Central Printing offers City flag replacement idea

An idea for saving the City of Columbia some money

By Ralph Roy Waggener

South Central Printing could furnish plastic core board yard sign size in 4/4 color to replace the flags or some of the flags. We could have a variety of informational materials on the poles. I don't know how they would be hung that would have to be figured out. The signs in 4/4 color are very inexpensive and we would furnish at our cost and take care of the freight by picking up with our delivery van. They come in various sizes Also we can furnish big signs like we did for Dakota Myers to go on building sides like the building beside the parking lot in front of our new Courthouse. Again at our cost Thanks. Little brother Ralph Roy South Central Printing, 426 Wain Street, Columbia, KY
