JIM: The Beulah Chapel church building, 1942

Full disclosure: there is some overlap between this short piece and this much longer one by Jason Harmon from early 2006: A gripping story of the Brethren in Christ movement in Adair County, KY - JIM
By JIM

The Beulah Chapel church building, 1942

The revival currently in progress at Beulah Chapel serves as reminder the building was dedicated 70 years ago come early September. Bro. Albert H. Engle, a Brethren in Christ minister who served in Adair County for 17 years (1927-1944), noted in his autobiographical sketch (penned in 1977) that construction started in 1941. He wrote that it was located "about one mile from Garlin, not far from Pleasant Grove and folk from there helped in the project."

JIM: A big coincidence - Weldon-Grenfell posters same day, different sources

CM Daily News for April 30, 2012 carried two old photos, The Ford Garage, Columbia, KY from the collection of Ann Heskamp Curtis, and T.E. Waggener operated store at 200 Public Square from a family collection. Only JIM would notice that the coincidence of the posters in the windows of old businesses reappearing 95 years later on CM, on the World Wide Web

By JIM

What are the odds that two photographs taken days apart fourscore and fifteen years ago and each displaying (albeit it indistinctly) the same bit of ephemera would show up on ColumbiaMagazine on the same day?

The point in common of the two pictures is the Weldon / Grenfell poster prominently displayed in the window of each building, an item which dates the photos to the summer of 1917, or more specifically, to some time between the latter part of July and the middle of September. During that era, posters frequently appeared in local businesses weeks in advance to promote coming events, such as circuses, chautauquas, and revivals.

Poetry by Robert Stone: Things will change. For Mother's Day

Things will change
- a sonnet for Mother's Day
I must have been a magnet to entice
the troubles on each mischief ladder rung.
I heard my mother older give advice
to have your children now while you are young.

I must have been a care when out about
bereft of need to know the other's heart.
My mother told the hurt who felt cut out
once part of family then always part.

I must have seemed a luck who lacking range
bestrode his narrow world a self-crowned king.
When loath to act just know that things will change
so never say you will not do a thing.

I was a busy worker often stressed,
recalling Mother's saying, get more rest.

- Robert Stone, 13 May 2012

Small cute -and lost - dog shows up at S. High Street home

Michael Bosela writes:

We found a small cute dog in our neighborhood a few days ago, Wednesday May 9, 2012, and are wondering if it is someone's pet. It looks healthy and well-cared for and is very friendly. I am not sure what breed it is, but it looks like a pug to me and it is male and has a curly tail. We live in on South High street, near the intersection with Fortune Street, just a few blocks from the old courthouse. To claim this dog please call us at 270-384-1352. Thanks! - Michael Bosela
