Kentucky Color: Three-Quarter Moon

By Billy Joe Fudge

Thursday afternoon I found myself completely enamored by the intensity of blue, white and gray in the eastern heavens over the Great Wooded South! The scene wrapped its comforting arms around me while a warm, winter sun slowly descended toward the western horizon.

Late Thursday, the Moon was three-quarters of the way to becoming a completely Full Moon near 5:30amCT, next Tuesday morning!

According to the Farmer's Almanac, a March Full Moon was referred to by the Pioneers and Native Americans as the Worm Moon. This signified the return of earthworms from the thawing ground and beetle larvae from thawing tree bark as the Spring thaw began.

Coincidentally, there will be a total Lunar Eclipse of this year's Worm Moon! It will be at its reddest from 5:00 to 6:00 a.m. Tuesday morning. There will not be another total lunar eclipse of a Worm Moon until March of 2044 according to AI.

Introducing The Farm Chronicles by Donna Rieder

The Adventures and Misadventures of a City Girl Gone Country

By Donna Rieder

I'm happy to announce that CM is letting me share excerpts and stories from my book! The Farm Chronicles was birthed when I moved into a rotting, abandoned Georgia farmhouse in 1989. It had been uninhabited for about 30 years, after the owners decided to move into town. I had been recently divorced and was renting a room while I looked for a place to move, and I had been boarding my horse at my friend Robin's place but really wanted a place in the country where I could have my horse at home. I was working part-time laminating countertops at a cabinet shop and doing carpentry and handyman jobs on the side, when I got asked to give a bid on finishing a basement.

In 1989, I only had a pager, and communications were made by using payphones, and I got lost on the way trying to find the jobsite, but rather than drive back and call for directions, I just kept driving around. I turned around and backtracked a couple times, and a few times I passed a rundown place with a barn roof peeking out of the overgrowth. I finally found the jobsite, and after taking some measurements, I told the people I'd get back to them with an estimate. I kept thinking about that old barn, and something told me to just go check it out.

Tommy Druen: A well-crafted life

Previous Column: Same person, different contexts

By Tommy Druen

We are all shaped by the people we watch. Some leave a mark intentionally. Others--like the man I encountered one rainy afternoon in 2006--leave one without ever knowing we exist.

A thunderstorm rolled in while my wife and I were at the beach. The sky turned charcoal, the waves grew choppy, and I found myself trapped indoors with little to do. Flipping through channels, I landed on the Travel Channel and encountered a wiry, sharp-tongued chef named Anthony Bourdain.

I was captivated immediately.

Here was a man who traveled the globe not in search of five-star luxury, but in pursuit of authenticity. He ate fermented shark in Iceland, roasted pigeon in Egypt, and balut--that controversial fetal duck delicacy from the Philippines. But what fascinated me most wasn't the shock value of the cuisine--it was the culture surrounding it. The stories. The people. The pride served alongside every plate. Through him, I traveled vicariously for years and came to understand that food is rarely just food. It is history, identity, and community made tangible.

That Christmas, my wife gave me a copy of Kitchen Confidential, Bourdain's 2000 memoir exposing the underbelly of New York's restaurant scene. Having never worked so much as a fast-food shift, I found myself immersed in a world both gritty and strangely beautiful.

Pesticide Disposal Program for farmers on March 5

From Nick Roy
Adair County Extension Agent for Agriculture & Natural Resources

The Adair County Cooperative Extension Service will host a free pesticide disposal event on March 5, offering farmers a safe and convenient way to discard unused or unwanted agricultural chemicals. The event will run from from 9amCT to 11amCT on Thursday, March 5, 2026, at the Adair County Extension Office, 409 Fairground Street, Columbia, KY.

The disposal program is designed to help local producers manage hazardous materials responsibly while reducing the environmental risks associated with improper chemical storage or dumping. More importantly, removing these unwanted pesticides from farmsteads prevent the possibility of accidental exposure to children, other family members, and workers.

Farmers are invited to bring a variety of accepted materials, including liquid or dry pesticides, herbicides, insecticides, and fungicides. These items will be handled and disposed of safely at no cost.

However, several materials will not be accepted, including paint or aerosol cans, fuels, solvents, fertilizer, and flammable materials. For more information, contact the Adair County Cooperative Extension Service at (270) 384-2317.

MCMS students win grant to improve dental health

Edmonton, KY - Two Metcalfe County Middle School students have been awarded $1,000 in grant funds to help improve dental health in our community. Lucy Blythe and Lilly Billingsley, 7th-grade students at Metcalfe County Middle School, earned second place in the Drs. Mody Make a Difference Service Learning Competition, which is offered through The Center for Gifted Studies at WKU.

Lucy and Lilly chose February to start their project as part of National Children's Dental Health Month. They hope to raise awareness of the importance of good oral hygiene by distributing dental care kits and inviting a dentist to speak to students during a special assembly in March.

"We are extremely proud of Lucy and Lilly for undertaking this leadership project for our Gifted and Talented program," Principal Jenny Stotts-Lundy said. "Proper dental health care can be a struggle for families who live in rural communities. This grant will ensure that every student at Metcalfe County Middle School has the supplies they need to develop and maintain good dental health habits."

Drs. Bharat and Bharati Mody established The Mody Endowed Fund in Service Learning at The Center for Gifted Studies to honor their lifelong dedication to community service and to inspire high-achieving students to give back. As award recipients, Lucy and Lilly will be required to provide a written report on the impact of their work and what they learned.

Meatballs are beloved in every culture

Cooks around the world and throughout the ages searched for inspiration for dinner and few things have been more inspirational than the meatball.

The earliest documented evidence of meatball-like dishes dates to ancient times, indeed. In ancient Persia (modern-day Iran), mama cooked up spiced ground lamb with rice and other grains in little balls to create the kofta -- and it was an idea that spread around the world through trade and conquests. Rome and China have some of the earliest written recipes, but meatballs are now a feature of cuisine worldwide.

Following is a crockpot recipe based on popular versions from Allrecipes and Chef Savvy...
