Cheatham believes national budget can be fixed

Retired Taylor County educator Frank Cheatham shared the following thoughts recently about America's budget problems and one expert's opinion on how to fix them.

"I could end the deficit in 5 minutes," Warren Buffett told CNBC. "You just pass a law that says that anytime there is a deficit of more than 3% of GDP, all sitting members of Congress are ineligible for re-election. The 26th amendment (granting the right to vote for 18 year-olds) took only 3 months and 8 days to be ratified! Why? Simple! The people demanded it. That was in 1971... before computers, e-mail, cell phones, etc. Of the 27 amendments to the Constitution, seven (7) took 1 year or less to become the law of the land... all because of public pressure.

GOP accounts for nearly all new registrations in December

From Nick Storm

Frankfort, KY - On January 9, 2026, the last day to file as a candidate in the 2026 primary election, Secretary of State Michael Adams announced that in December 2025, Kentucky's voter rolls grew by 6,550, with Republicans picking up 5,690 of the net new registrants.

"Eighty-six percent of new voter registrations in December were Republican," Adams said. "This shows the importance of our primary elections, and we hope for a solid turnout in May."

In December, 4,422 voters were removed: 3,906 who were deceased, 232 who moved out of state and re-registered, 170 felony convicts, 66 adjudged mentally incompetent, 17 who voluntarily de-registered, 19 duplicate registrations, and 12 non-citizens.

Republican registration constitutes 48 percent of the electorate, with 1,601,098 voters. Republican registration grew by 5,690 voters, a .36 percent increase. Democratic registration accounts for 41 percent of the electorate, with 1,375,378 voters. Democratic registration fell by 4,580, a .33 percent decrease. There are 372,973 voters registered under other political affiliations (mostly independent), making up 11 percent of the electorate. "Other" registration rose by 1,018, a .27 percent increase.

Basketball: Indians face Taylor in 2A4S Finals

By Trey Stephens, Staff Writer

On Thursday, January 8, 2026, the Adair County Indians Boys Varsity Basketball team defeated the LaRue County Hawks 92-80 in the 2A Section 4 semifinals at Marion County High School.

Senior Dawson Gilbert led the Tribe in scoring with 28, followed by Landon Blakey with 25. Tylin George rounded out the trio of high scorers for the Indians with 21 points. Blakey posted a double-double, with a team-leading 11 rebounds, followed by Dawson Gilbert and John Shehan with seven each. The team shot 56% from the floor, and 33% from beyond the three point arc. The Tribe continues to show what a high-powered offense they have, putting up 82 points or more in four of the last five games.

The Indians will seek to keep the high scoring going as they rematch the Taylor County Cardinals (11-6) in the 2A Fourth Sectional final. The Tribe will look for a similar result to their last matchup, when the Indians outlasted the Cardinals in a 82-80 thriller in Columbia. Taylor County overcame Marion County 60-32 in the 2A Fourth Sectional semifinals. In the last matchup between the Indians and the Cardinals, a rocking John Burr Memorial Gymnasium played a major part in the win.

Today, the Indians could benefit greatly from a hyper Robe Dome filled with Indians faithful, so, if you can, please get out to Lebanon and cheer on Adair County. Tip off is scheduled for 1pmCT on Saturday, January 10, 2026, at the Robe Dome on the campus of Marion County High School, 735 E Main St, Lebanon, KY. Tickets are $8.85, and available online at eventlink.com.

Basketball: Lady Indians extend streak with home win

By Trey Stephens, Staff Writer

On Thursday, January 8, 2026, the Adair County Lady Indians defeated the Casey County Lady Rebels 51-40 at home.

Adair County fell behind early in the first, but quickly deployed a full court press which was quite effective at stunting the Lady Rebels ball movement and giving the Lady Indians plenty of transition scoring opportunities. Thanks to the high pressure defense, Adair County built a 15-point lead by the half 33-18. The Lady Indians held a similar margin for the remainder of the game, leading 41-27 at the end of the third, before a small run by Casey County would tighten it just a little, leading to the 51-40 final score. Unofficial scoring for Adair County has Reese Bardin as the leading scorer with 19, followed by Ella Brown with nine, and Allee Campbell with eight.

This was the third straight win for Adair County and, shockingly, the first home win of the season, of only four home games so far. The Lady Indians have been road warriors, amassing an insanely impressive 6-2 record away from their home court, both on neutral sites and as the visitors.

In what should seem normal to Adair County now, they will be back on the road on Monday as they face the LaRue County Lady Hawks (4-9). Tip is scheduled for 7pmCT on Monday, January 12, 2026, at Larue County High School, 925 S Lincoln Blvd, Hodgenville, KY.
