Apply now for 2026 Rogers Scholars and Rogers Explorers The Center for Rural Development is accepting applications for the 2026 Rogers Scholars and Rogers Explorers summer youth leadership programs. Applications for both Rogers Scholars and Rogers Explorers must be submitted online by January 31, 2026, at www.centeryouthprograms.com. Rogers Scholars (current 10th graders) provides valuable leadership skills and exclusive college scholarship opportunities for high school students to seize their potential as the region's next generation of leaders. Scholars spend one week on the campus of Lindsey Wilson University or Morehead State University. Rogers Explorers (current 8th graders) focuses on leadership development, technology, teamwork, and career pathway exploration in STEM and other fields. Explorers spend three days and two nights on one of the following college campuses: Lindsey Wilson University, University of the Cumberlands, Eastern Kentucky University, Union Commonwealth University, University of Pikeville, or Morehead State University. Eligible students must live within The Center's 45-county primary service area, which includes Adair, Casey, Cumberland, Green, Metcalfe, Russell, and Taylor Counties. Winners of Christmas in Columbia Parade 2025 Saturday night was a frosty 39 degrees for the 25th annual Christmas in Columbia parade. Cars and trucks lined Jamestown Street filling every parking space that faced the street as parade watchers hoped to watch the floats from the warmth of their vehicles as they waited for the parade to begin. In-County Float winners, earning a first Place $300 & Plaque; second place $200 & Plaque; and third place - $100 & Plaque were: first place: Milltown Church Worship Team; second place: Columbia Church of Christ; third place: Free Union Separate Baptist Church; and fourth place: Freedom Separate Baptist Church. Edward Rooks, 76, Adair County, KY Edward Rooks, of Columbia, passed away Saturday, December 6, 202. He was 76 years of age. Born December 20, 1948, in Adair County, he was a son of the late John and Pearl Bryant Rooks. Edward worked as a drywall installer for over 40 years. He spent most of his time working, but when he did take time off, he enjoyed coon hunting and horseback riding. Roxie Akin Williams, 69, Burkesville, KY Roxie Akin Williams, age 69 of Burkesville, Kentucky passed away on Friday, December 5, 2025 at her home. Roxie was born on November 26, 1956 in Cumberland County, KY to the late Jesse Ritchey Akin and Allie Irene Poindexter Akin. She was a member of Ashlock Church of Christ and a former employee of Cumberland County Hospital for 26 years. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Michael Williams, one daughter and son-in-law Leona and Chris Cary, one grandson John Russell Bowlin, siblings George Akin, Joe Akin, Laura Chambless, Elizabeth Walker and one infant brother. Edsel Keith Elliott, 70, Burkesville, KY Edsel Keith Elliott of Burkesville, Kentucky passed away on Saturday, November 29, 2025, in Metcalfe County, Kentucky having attained the age of 70 years, and 16 days. He was born on Sunday, November 13, 1955, in Burkesville, Kentucky, the son of Otis Keith & Patty Nell (Lawson) Elliott. He was of the Christian faith and a devoted member of the Burkesville Community Church. A proud patriot, he served in the United States Marine Corps, where he attained the rank of Lance Corporal. Following his military service, he built a strong work ethic and reputation as a line supervisor for Akebono Brake Co.
