October is National Pedestrian Safety Month From Marla Marrs Frankfort, KY - October is National Pedestrian Safety Month, and Kentuckians are reminded to do their part in protecting all who use our roadways. As daylight hours shorten in the coming weeks, drivers and pedestrians are encouraged to follow safe practices to make roadways safer for everyone. "Whether you're traveling by car, bike, or on foot, we're reminding everyone to watch out for one another," said Gov. Beshear. "When we stay alert, slow down, and look out for our neighbors on the road, we can help ensure everyone gets home safely." Daylight Saving Time ends on Sunday, November 2, 2025, meaning darkness will occur earlier in the day. Everyone on the road should be cautious because lower light conditions makes seeing pedestrians and cyclists harder. Last year in Kentucky, 73% of the 98 pedestrian deaths occurred after dark. So far this year, there have been 59 pedestrian deaths, 42 of which occurred after dark. Getting farm fresh foods into Kentucky schools From Madison Pergrem Frankfort, KY - For nearly 30 years the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Department of Defense Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (DoD Fresh) has worked to increase access to farm fresh produce for school children through various funding sources. Operating through a partnership between the USDA and the DoD Defense Logistics Agency, as well as the state distributing agencies in each participating state, DoD Fresh has programs in 49 states, including Kentucky, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and Guam. USDA does not impose a cap on the amount of USDA Foods entitlement used through this program and allocations may be changed on several dates throughout the year. But even with the program, getting farm fresh products into schools can sometimes take an advocate. For Kentucky, that's where What Chefs Want (WCW) steps in. As the state vendor for DoD Fresh, WCW delivers fresh, local fruits and vegetables to schools. "Studies show farm produce from a local source has more nutrients than those that have to be shipped longer distances," Kentucky Agriculture Commissioner Jonathan Shell said. "Healthier, more nutrient dense meals make for a child that is more focused, alert, and ready to learn. Partnering with What Chefs Want has allowed Kentucky schools to focus on nutrition closer to home, benefiting local farmers and school children alike." WCW, a family-owned foodservice distribution service created and headquartered in Kentucky, is one of the state's dedicated partners for school nutrition. WCW works to help Kentucky and neighboring states' schools procure fruits and vegetables from Kentucky farmers. Tommy Druen: What is Love? Previous Column: I lost my hero By Tommy Druen My uncle collected comic books. Growing up, that meant I had access to stories far beyond the standard superheroes my friends knew. But it wasn't the adventures that hooked me most--it was the encyclopedias: The Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe and DC's Who's Who. They cataloged every character with details like aliases, first appearances, and, most fascinating to me, origin stories. Origins mattered because they explained the "why." They showed the crucible moments that turned ordinary people into something greater--or darker. Peter Parker became Spider-Man not because of the spider bite, but because of the guilt he carried after Uncle Ben's death. Bruce Wayne donned the cape because he couldn't endure others suffering as he had when his parents were gunned down in an alley. (Granted, not every character had that depth. Sorry, Matter-Eater Lad.) Still, origin stories revealed purpose. We may not have superpowers, but we all have our own origin stories. Mine includes 1992, when I was 14 and entering eighth grade. My mom received the class roster, and I eagerly searched for guys I hoped were on it. None were there. Not even the boys I didn't like. By fate or mischief, I landed in a class with eight boys and twenty girls. Many would envy those odds. My 14-year-old self did not.
