Kentucky Color: Tebbs Bend Nature and Recreation Area By Billy Joe Fudge If we want wildflowers, natural habitat and ultimately a forest in the Great Wooded South, all we have to do is stop mowing our lawns and fields. The upland fields of the Tebbs Bend Nature and Recreation Area is a prime example of the Barrens Prairie grasslands our pioneer forefathers found when they came across the Appalachian Mountains into South Central Kentucky. The Western Slope of the dividing ridge between the Cumberland River on the East and the Little Barren, Barren River and Green Rivers on the West was the beginning of Kentucky's Tall Grass Prairie. It stretched from here across Southern Kentucky to near the Mississippi River. This grand example of a Tall Grass Prairie at Homeplace on Green River/Tebbs Bend Nature and Recreation Area is maintained by fire just as the Native Americans maintained Kentucky's Tall Grass Prairie prior to our forefathers arriving here. 2025-09-30 08:26:34 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Kentucky Color by Billy Joe Fudge
