Carol Perkins: Relaxing at the beach

Previous Column: Three Dog Night

By Carol Perkins

The waves crashed against the beach like a bull charging toward a matador. I couldn't see, but the sound was enough to tell me to stay away. As I sat on our tenth floor balcony late at night with everyone else in bed, I thought about the danger below if someone were daring enough to fight the waves that late. No one would dare, I decided.

Beautiful sights and sounds can also be the most dangerous. The beach is a place for relaxing, but I never forget to respect the waters.

When we were young, we made a beach trip to Daytona every summer during the fourth of July weekend, which was Guy's annual vacation date and the worst time to go.

Before cell phones and computers, finding a room meant either driving the strip or knowing the place you wanted to go and calling ahead.

Carla, Jon, and I sat in the car and watched Guy go inside a motel. When he came out with no key, we knew the tension would rise.

Black Bear sighted in Adair County

By Donna Rieder

A black bear has been spotted near Clifty Creek Farm in Adair County. I've got my electric fences turned on around my chickens and bees. I'm not worried about the horse, but I AM locking the goats in the barn at night.

The bear pictured has been checking out this whole area. It's got everything he needs for survival; food, water, shelter, not a lot of human activity... I won't be surprised if he hangs around.

Travel: Go West! Overview of trip to Colorado/Utah

Note: We'll be adding photos from Robert's trip over the next few days/weeks. Bookmark this page to see all the photos from this installment in one place.

By Robert Ellis
robertelliswoodworking.com

For this latest adventure, a compromise was agreed upon by the Photographer and Navigator for seeing both Colorado and Utah, and certain places in each of them. Since we've already visited Southern Utah several times, we planned to focus on Northeast Utah and North Central/Western Colorado.

The first leg of the journey had us flying into Denver, picking up a rental car, and heading out of town in the direction of Rocky Mountain National Park. After that, it was over to Dinosaur National Monument, which is in both Colorado and Utah.

On the Colorado side, we drove the scenic route that ends at Harpers Corner. For most of the drive we were in Colorado, but the grand finale-Harper's Corner (as if Utah needs anymore attractions) was in Utah!

While in Utah, we stayed in the town of Vernal and visited Sheep Creek Canyon Geological Area and Flaming Gorge reservoir. Leaving Vernal, we visited the Utah side of Dinosaur National Monument, and then onwards to the towns of Telluride and Ouray, Colorado. On our last full day of adventure we headed back towards Denver, taking in Grand Mesa National Forest. The last leg of the trip we avoided Interstate 70 as much as possible, and drove the scenic Highway 6 that runs parallel to it.

Now back to Kentucky to take in (and hopefully photograph) the Fall colors!

KY adding automated speed enforcement devices in work zones

From Naitore Djigbenou/Allen Blair

Frankfort, KY - To further increase safety in work zones for Kentucky drivers and construction crews, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) is now installing automated speed enforcement devices in active highway work zones.

Among the first places to receive cameras this week and in the coming weeks are a U.S. 25 work zone in Fayette County, an I-75 work zone near Corbin, and one on I-64 in Shelby County. The devices will not be active at first, giving drivers time to adjust to the presence of the new technology before enforcement begins in October.

"Every Kentuckian deserves to make it home safely," said KYTC Secretary Jim Gray. "We're hopeful this initiative will inspire drivers to be more aware of their speeds in every work zone to avoid preventable crashes and save lives."

House Bill 664, known as the Jared Lee Helton Act, authorizes automated speed enforcement in active work zones. Passed by the legislature and signed into law by Gov. Andy Beshear earlier this year, the act is named in honor of a Kentucky highway worker who lost his life in a work zone crash. Bill sponsor Rep. John Blanton welcomed the rollout, stressing the importance of saving lives.
