Sentence of 20 years given in AYDC riot case From Brian Wright, Commonwealth's Attorney, 29th Judicial Circuit An Adair County Circuit Court jury found Demaurion Moore, age 19, guilty of several crimes Friday (March 14, 2025) following a three-day jury trial. Moore was convicted of First-Degree Rape, Complicity to First-Degree Sodomy, Promoting a Sexual Performance by a Minor, First-Degree Riot, and two (2) counts of Fourth-Degree Assault. The jury recommended that Moore serve a total of 25 years in prison. The charges against Moore were the result of his involvement in a riot that occurred at the Adair Youth Development Center (AYDC) in November 2022. According to testimony at trial, Moore, who was 17 years old at the time and from Louisville, had been detained at AYDC for a short period of time prior to the riot. The riot began when another juvenile assaulted a Youth Worker at the facility and was able to gain possession of the worker's keys. Kentucky Color: Smokey II, the legend is born By Billy Joe Fudge Smokey was born in June of 1955. Dad was promised the pick of the litter but when he found out the puppies had been born, all were already gone except for the runt of the litter, Smokey. As we have discussed in the past, Smokey was a Lemon-Spotted English Pointer. You can read about what makes them visually different from other Pointer Breeds in a recent Kentucky Color: Best Covey Dog. As one might imagine, Smokey's name stemmed from his almost total white color. Whether hunting in the snow or out traipsing with me across the Rock Lick watershed in front of our house or the Pettit's Fork watershed behind our house, he would often become invisible when not moving. Additionally, that little white puppy being named Smokey was a preternatural occurrence in my life considering that another animal named Smokey would frame my adult life in my career as a Wildland Firefighter and Forest Manager! My philosophy is heavily weighted by the idea that there are no accidents. Smokey, being of slight build and an anemic looking runt would most probably not have been chosen over his more impressive litter mates by my dad. The fact that those hunters who chose prior to Dad's arrival did not choose Smokey is the proof in the pudding. 2025-03-29 13:10:43 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Kentucky Color by Billy Joe Fudge
Tommy Druen: Literacy was a treasure for Clem Coomer Previous Column: The Power of the Small By Tommy Druen Reading is in my blood. As I've mentioned in this column before, my mother was a school librarian. But my lineage on this subject runs even deeper. Two of my grandparents served on the local library board, and my uncle was a book dealer. Still, my greatest inspiration for reading may have come from a family member I never even met. Clem Coomer, my second great-grandfather, was born in rural Adair County in 1877. Like so many of his generation, formal education was a luxury. The demands of the family farm took precedence over school, and as a result, Clem spent much of his life not knowing how to read. That changed when he met Miss Bertha Hamilton. Bertha was among the first graduates of Lindsey Wilson College and soon taught at a one-room schoolhouse in the community where Clem lived. Despite their vastly different backgrounds, the two fell in love and soon married. Already in his thirties, Clem learned to read under the patient instruction of his wife. Naturally, I never knew Clem personally. But he lived to the age of 95, and both my mother and grandmother knew him well. Through their stories, I gathered a sense of who he was--a kind and compassionate man with a remarkable gift for storytelling. Yet what resonated with me most was his devotion to reading the Bible daily. For a man of deep faith who had been denied literacy for so long, the ability to read the Bible for himself was a treasure, not just a skill. I can't recall a time when I didn't know how to read. Basketball: Sweet 16 caps an amazing season By Trey Stephens, Staff Writer On Wednesday, March 26, 2025, the Adair County Indians Basketball team fell to the Bowling Green Purples 52-51 in overtime. Despite a tough end to the year, this was an amazing season for the Tribe. This is undoubtedly a season to be proud of, especially for this year's senior class. Their incredible effort and dedication to Adair County Basketball will not be soon forgotten. Senior Connor Loy was praised after the game by Bowling Green's coach, who said he knew he "Isn't going to quit". Senior Isaiah Cochran had some personal moving remarks in his postgame comments calling his move to Adair County, "The best decision I have ever made." No one really knows what next season will hold for the Indians, an almost total lineup reconstruction is definite, as the only player who saw consistent minutes this year and can return for next year is Dawson Gilbert, but that uncertainty for next season is a problem for another day. In the meantime we can reflect and be proud of the incredible season put together by the 2024-2025 Indians, 5th Region Champions and 30-6 on the season. A historic team.
