Letter: Blacksmith Shop was a family business

Bill Parson writes:
In response to the question by Dr. Rodger D. Smith, he is absolutely correct on the blacksmith shop being located at this location. The owners of the shop were my father, William Robert "Buck" Parson, and his brother, Huston Parson.

Looking at the picture, the blacksmith shop was located between Town Creek (on the right side and what is now the car wash). This was the second shop at that location. The original shop owner was my great-grandfather, William "Bud" Patrick Parson.

The original shop was built in the late 1800s, and the shop Rodger Dale is referring to was constructed in the mid-1930s. When Dad became disabled, and Uncle Huston was unable to work, naturally the old shop sat idle. Even I don't remember the exact time, but a snow fell overnight and the old structure just couldn't handle the weight. Bob Clutterbuck and I took everything out of the shop, and I stored it in my Uncle Richard's barn.

I was in contact with folks at the Kentucky Horse Park, going to donate all the shop equipment so they could recreate a Blacksmith shop, when I discovered someone had broken into the barn and stolen everything related to the shop.

KSP: Two arrested in weekend tragedy

Columbia, KY - Kentucky State Police (KSP) Post 15 Troopers responded to a two-vehicle injury collision on KY 55 Bypass near the intersection with Pelham Branch Road in Adair County that occurred on December 21, 2024, at 4:30 P.M. CST.

The preliminary investigation revealed that Joel Hammack, 46, of Crossville, TN, was traveling south on KY 55 Bypass in a 2016 Ford F150 at a high rate of speed. Mr. Hammack came upon a slower-moving 2018 Kia Sorento traveling south on KY 55 Bypass. The Kia Sorento was operated by Townya Ritzie, 62, of Columbia. Due to Mr. Hammock's speed, his vehicle collided with the rear end of the Kia Sorento. The collision forced Ms. Ritzie's vehicle off of the roadway where it overturned.

Basketball: Indians fall to Newport 56-60

By Trey Stephens, Staff Writer

On Saturday, December 21, 2024, in the third round of the Chad Gardner Law King of the Bluegrass tournament, the Adair County Indians Boys Varsity Basketball team fell to the Newport Wildcats 56-50.

Adair fell behind early, but stayed right on the Wildcats' heels, trailing by only 3 at the half, and holding within 5 at the end of the third quarter. The fourth quarter saw Adair come back and take their first lead of the second half, with just under two minutes to go, after Blane Bardin hit two massive back-to-back threes. Unfortunately, the Wildcats would fight back and win late.

The night for the Indians as a whole was marked by shooting struggles, with the team going just 40% from the floor and 18% from the three point mark. The leading scorer for Adair County was Connor Loy, with 24. Loy shot 11/16 from the floor. Isaiah Cochran was the team's leading rebounder, with 9, followed by Brayton Coomer with 4. This was another category the team struggled with, notching just 19 total rebounds to Newport's 32.

Despite the loss, the team will still finish King of the Bluegrass ahead of some very talented teams, like Ashland Blazer, Butler County, and Trinity High School.

Adair County will return to action after Christmas in the Mason County Invitational Tournament. They will face host Mason County at 6:30pmCT on Friday, December 27, 2024, followed by a game against Campbell County at 10:30amCT on Saturday, December 28, 2024.

The MCIT will be held in the Mason County Fieldhouse, 1320 U.S. Hwy 68, Maysville, KY.
