Christmas Happenings Sixty-six Years Ago, 1958 By Mike Watson Santa Claus was scheduled to arrive in Columbia for his pre-Christmas consultations with local boys and girls on Friday afternoon, December 19, 1958, at 2 o'clock. He was sponsored by the Columbia Junior Chamber of Commerce--the Jaycees--and was set up to meet children in the northwestern corner of the Columbia Public Square. He had treats for all the tots. The Columbia Volunteer Fire Department and the Jaycees, along with the Adair County High School Band escorted Santa into town and while he conferred with excited children, the Band gave a concert of Christmas carols. There was also news of the "Miss Snowflake" contest: The 'Village Teepee,' the Columbia youth center, is sponsoring a 'Miss Snowflake' contest during the two weeks leading up to Christmas. There will be a dance on New Year's Eve at the 'Teepee' during which 'Miss Snowflake' will be crowned. Contestants are girls from the clubs and organizations at the High School and the objective is to raise money for the youth center. Containers in many local business in town are to collect contributions, each container with a girl's name or photograph, each penny is a vote. 2024-12-10 11:40:49 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Mike Watson - History
