LWC students show appreciation to local community on Malvina Farkle Day

By Venus Popplewell
LWC Director of Public Relations

"So many of our days are take days, but this is a day of giving where we try to make a difference in somebody else's life."

Those were the words of Lindsey Wilson College President William T. Lucky Jr. as he stood before a sleepy but electrified crowd of LWC students, early Wednesday morning, who were ready and willing to disperse into the Columbia-Adair County community and show their appreciation through acts of service.

"Malvina Farkle Day is a day where we take a time out and consider the opportunity and the impact that we have on Columbia-Adair County and the ability we have to make a difference throughout this commonwealth," said Luckey who is in his 26th year as president of LWC. "We will have groups spread out all over the community today. It's a wonderful opportunity to give back. This is a day of giving. So many of our days are take days, but this is a day where we try to make a difference in somebody else's life."

Letter: Linda's Beautiful Bird Quilt

Jill Petrey writes:
Hello Linda, Your bird quilt is so beautiful, a true work of art. I just love birds. I did a google image search and found some info on a similar quilt you might find interesting. I think your quilt is even prettier than the one shown.

It references a book where reader's might find a similar pattern:
'The Garden Bouquet pattern was syndicated under the title of The Nancy Page Quilt Club, with one block per week being offered in prominent newspapers during the early 1930's to 1933. Each block had an urn with the two birds on it and a different flower in the middle. There were a total of 20 blocks. If you missed a pattern you could order one for 5 cents! See Roderick Kiracofe's "The American Quilt, A History of Cloth & Comfort 1750 - 1950", for another example of this design.'
This was from a site called WorthPoint

Letter: Mystery Photo

Mike Bell writes:
I believe the red brick building in the back ground is the Bank of Columbia branch on Jamestown Hill. And the white building would be the old K&F store or, perhaps the Video Warehouse. It may well have something to do with the Bell Pepper Festival, however we all wear our event tee shirts well past the event itself.

Carol Perkins: Work Hands (2024)

Previous Column: One box can change a life

By Carol Perkins

A field of tobacco is not a common sight like it was when I was a girl. My grandparents on both sides raised tobacco and hired "work hands" to get the crops in the ground and in the barn.

Recently, I mentioned work hands in a group who had no idea what I meant. They were from somewhere else or are too young to know.

I explained that a "work hand" is a person hired to work on a farm. These work hands may be temporary, like high school boys looking to earn a few bucks, or tenant farmers who live on someone's "place" and work year 'round.

One of my friends said that's when she was in school and asked where she lived, she said "I live on Mr.... place."

The modern farmer still needs "work hands" to complete their jobs.
