Fall Web Worms at work

2024-09-19 - Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.
According to Billy Joe Fudge this is what happens to a plant when Fall Web Worms take over. They devour all the leaf while leaving the largest leaf veins. They will move on to other leaves as they need more food until the end of this cycle of their life. The good news is that plants have already made most of the starches they need to fire up the growing season next spring.

Letter: Mystery photo

Thirza Peevey writes:
I don't know who the ladies are, but there are some clues in the photo that might help. The cars behind them seem to be late seventies models. The blue car seems to be a 1978-ish Chevy Caprice, the brown car behind them looks like it might be a roughly '78 or '79 Datsun 510. The car up to the left looks to be a mid seventies Chrysler. I'm not sure about the red car. It doesn't exactly look like a Jeep. I would say mid seventies Suzuki, but I don't remember seeing one around Columbia.

The building behind them appears to be one of the branch banks, maybe the old First National branch? One of them is wearing a "pepper picking T shirt" so I'm guessing something bell pepper related, and that was about the time frame when there was a big push to bring pepper growing into the county.

Vision screening law starts Jan 1 for all KY license holders

From Naitore Djigbenou/Allen Blair

Frankfort, KY - Few things are more important for safe driving than good eyesight. That's why vision screening will be required in Kentucky next year for anyone renewing a Kentucky driver's license. This new requirement, enacted during the 2021 General Assembly, aims to promote highway safety by ensuring that all drivers maintain good vision throughout their driving career.

Starting January 1, 2025, all Kentuckians must undergo a vision screening to renew their license. Multiple states also have adopted mandatory vision screenings, including Indiana, Ohio and Missouri, to ensure drivers have the visual acuity required to operate a vehicle safely.

"Driving is a privilege many of us enjoy and this best practice is one way we look out for each other on the road to make our highways safer for everyone," said Gov. Andy Beshear.

House Bill 439, signed into law by Gov. Beshear after the state legislature passed it three years ago, now takes effect on January 1, 2025. Key details of the new vision screening process include:

TJRH: Mass Casualty DRILL leads to better community readiness

From Stacey Biggs
T.J. Regional Health

Glasgow, KY - We never want to think about a mass casualty incident happening in our community, but preparations must be made to ensure a successful response should it become a reality. A collaborative Community Mass Casualty Drill took place on Wednesday, September 18, 2024, in Glasgow, to test the community's readiness for handling large-scale emergencies.

In the drill's scenario, two school buses transporting students and staff collided, resulting in dozens of patients being triaged at the scene and transported for care. Volunteers from Barren County Schools, Glasgow Independent Schools, and Metcalfe County Schools played the roles of students and staff.

One of the participants, Natallie Pennington, is a junior at Metcalfe County High School. She said that she and her classmates volunteered to participate "to benefit the community." She wanted to be part of it to help healthcare workers be prepared in case a similar event was to take place. "Overall it was definitely a learning experience," Natallie said. "I plan on going into healthcare and seeing all of these people work together and help each other out was reassuring to me."
