Terrorists of 911 - looking into the eyes of hate

By Pam Capozziello

My remembrance of 911 - Back in 2001, I was living in West Palm Beach, Florida and worked in a drive thru zoo in various retail stores.

On July 3, a horrible man came up to the window ordering drinks and he was exceptionally mean and nasty to me. He had very scary eyes, like the devil, and spoke with a foreign accent. He was with a few other guys, all of which were darker skinned. I remember the white car they came in as well.

After the terrorists pictures came out in the newspaper following the twin towers collapsing I had immediately recognized the scary eyes man as the same man that came to my window demanding drinks and just super nasty to me like he hated women.

First TADD signs going up in Adair County

By Mike Keltner, Director
Adair County Emergency Management

Each year across the US, more deaths occur due to flooding than from any other thunderstorm related hazard. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that over half of all flood-related drownings occur when a vehicle is driven into hazardous flood water. The next highest percentage of flood-related deaths is due to walking into or near flood waters. People underestimate the force and power of water.

Many of the deaths occur in cars swept downstream. Many of these drownings are preventable. A mere 6 inches of fast-moving flood water can knock over an adult. It takes just 12 inches of rushing water to carry away most cars. It is NEVER safe to drive or walk into flood waters.

We have repetitive flash flooding issues on some roadways in Adair County. Many of these waterway crossing or waterway adjacent roadways present a threat to the safety of motorists when flooding is present.

Letter: Water bill outsourcing

Mike Bell
Just how much more money do we pay on our water bills for this outsourcing that CAUD is not, it seems, willing to do in house?

New signal heads installed on US127 in Russell Springs

From Amber Hale

Motorists will soon encounter a new type of traffic signal at three intersections along U.S. 127 in Russell Springs. The new lights include a flashing yellow arrow, which indicates that motorists are allowed to proceed with caution but must yield to oncoming traffic. This new type of traffic signal designed to improve safety at intersections is being installed at the intersections of KY 80, Northridge Shopping Center and KY 619 along U.S. 127.

The flashing yellow arrow replaces the traditional green circular light for motorists making a permitted left turn and more clearly indicates to motorists that they MUST yield to oncoming traffic.

Letter: Why are water bills outsourced?

Yvonne Kolbenschlag writes:
My water bill payment is automatically deducted from a bank account. There is no need for a business envelope to be included with each monthly statement. I realize an envelope is not much of waste and can be recycled, if a person takes time to recycle. I do. However, making paper requires destroying trees and a good bit of pollution to make the trees into paper. If you are ever in the vicinity of a pulp mill, you will want to hold your nose.

There are extra considerations involving transportation of excess mailing items. I called the water department once about this, thinking a computer could certainly know how to exclude envelopes with billing that involves deductions from a bank account. Seems as though that since the billing is 'outsourced', nothing locally can be done about the unneeded envelopes.

Their computers know how to deduct payments, but do not know how to exclude unneeded envelopes?

"We cannot do anything about that, because billing is outsourced."

ACHS Football stats from win over LaRue

By Trey Stephens, Staff Writer

As I wrote in my last piece, Adair County Football defeated LaRue County 14-0 last Friday in a game that was suspended at halftime, and later called final due to the weather.

Despite all of that, here are what the stats tell us from last week.

The Indians rushed for a season high 154 yards in just the one half of play. On the defense side, the Indians also managed to surrender just 34 rushing yards and 49 passing yards to the LaRue offense, seriously limiting their effectiveness.
