Lanterns & Tombstones Tour this Friday, Sept 6 From Mike Watson The final installment of the Lanterns & Tombstones Tour for the year 2024 will take place at 7pmCT this Friday, September 6, 2024. The Tour will form at the edge of the Judicial Center parking area at Merchant and Monroe Streets, and will proceed up the drive to the Historic Cemetery. We will return to the same location. Mike Watson and Dave Thomas lead a guided tour through the historic cemetery on the first Friday evening of each month, April through September. A brief history of the cemetery is given and each tour visits different residents of the Silent City, which dates to about 1810. Come out to the last tour of the season. We will also be giving information on the Annual Silent City Tour that will feature several presenters scattered through the cemetery that will take place on Monday, October 14, 2024. Also the "Shot, Stabbed, Hanged & More" Tour of the Columbia Public Square is scheduled for Friday, October 25, 2024. New book from Jon Reynolds: Illuminating Nature From Dr. Bob Reynolds In his book, Illuminating Nature, Chasing Light across the Landscape, Jon Reynolds describes his boyhood exposure to that environment: "As a boy, I spent many hours exploring my grandfather's farm in central Kentucky [Lee and Gertrude Reynolds, located in Taylor County], whiling away golden summer days at the creek that ran through the lone patch of trees along its boundaries. I began every journey with the intention of locating its source but quickly lost interest in the destination as I stopped to see a crawdad, stomped through a shallow, or became mesmerized by the sun-dappled water lapping over the rocks. Mornings stretched into middays and meandered into late afternoons. Eventually, I would trudge back home with tired legs and soggy shoes, pledging that next time definitely, yes! KSP: Post 15 to conduct traffic safety checkpoints From Trooper Jonathan Houk Kentucky State Police Post 15 will be conducting periodic traffic safety checkpoints in the Post 15 area, which includes Green, Taylor, Marion, Washington, Russell, Casey, Adair, Metcalfe, Monroe, Clinton, and Cumberland counties. Adair County checkpoints include the intersections at KY 76 and KY 206 (1st), KY 80 and KY 531, KY 61 and KY 533, KY 80 and Gentry Mill Road, KY 551 and KY 76, KY 206 and KY 76 (2nd), Sulpher Creek Road and Millerfield Road, Columbia Bypass and KY 55 South (Past Youth Development Center), KY 767 Pelham Branch Road and KY 55 Bypass, KY 206 and KY 531, KY 80 and KY 768, KY 206 and Green Hills Road, KY 55 and KY 633, KY 61 and KY Jones Chapel Road, and KY 55 and KY 92. These checkpoints will be conducted as part of Post 15's highway safety efforts. Troopers will be checking for violations of Kentucky traffic and regulatory laws including, but not limited to, motor vehicle equipment safety, licensing of drivers, motor vehicle registration, child restraints, and operation of motor vehicle while under the influence of intoxicants.
