Sheriff Brockman announces plan to retire

By Sheriff Josh Brockman

I write this to inform that I have filed my intent to retire effective 10-01-24. This has been a difficult decision, however I have been eligible to retire for almost 3 years now and have pushed it off and continued to serve.

It comes to a point where an individual can no longer ignore the matter. It comes to a point where you are moving backwards in your retirement and not forward. My family has asked me to slow down and come home and that's what I intend to do. I am going to do my best to give back to them as much time as I can because I've taken so much from them.

I can only pray that the people of Adair County understand and feel that my family and I have given enough.

Mediation for Adair Fiscal Court - a second call

By Linda Waggener

This is a second call for mediation to bring the focus of leaders of Adair County, KY government to the table to get agreement on budget and personnel issues.

We are in an emergency situation as evidenced by actions in meetings, filmed and posted on Facebook yet again. A simple appeal sent members of the court off into tangents, no results for the people, no help for employees. Morale sounds like it is at an all time low. This cannot continue.

Letter: Adair Sheriff Brockman choked back tears begging for help for Deputies

Victoria Pike writes:
It broke my heart to hear Sheriff Josh Brockman choke back tears begging for help from the Fiscal Court to help him somehow be able to retain his deputies when other counties are recruiting at up to $6 an hour more. Sheriff Brockman said $19.50 is about it for him while others pay around $26.

He's down to 4 deputies this week. He has put in another 100 hour week and is exhausted as usual. This low pay and inflation has forced many to leave. We have invested money in their training and now they have moved on because they have families to feed. It scares me to think that there may come a day at this rate when we call needing law enforcement and there xjust aren't enough to go around. I urge each one that reads this to get informed and call your magistrate and demand they do whatever is necessary to see Sheriff Brockman has the funds he needs to maintain his department at a wage he can retain his deputies. Listen to the court meeting.

I sat there next to Sheriff Brockman and was nearly in tears myself. After he spoke, I raised my hand and in citizens comments I said I supported him and his department 100%. Then I reminded them of a few years ago during Covid when I asked them to help him. I reminded them if one of our deputies is injured or worse out on a call by themselves that that injury would be on them.

Nobody likes taxes but that's how services to the public are paid for. I reminded them again Tuesday night that those deputies lives are more important than someone being mad over paying a bit more to insure we have a full sheriffs department to serve the needs of Adair County.

So speak up and support our Adair County Sheriff's department. You more than likely will need them at some point in your life and it would be good to know they are still there for us in a time of need. So make those calls or visits and tell the magistrates you want them to get together and come up with a way to save our sheriffs department.
- Thank you and bless you, Vicky Pike

KY welcomes Dolly Parton to celebrate Imagination Library

From Crystal Staley/James Hatchett

Frankfort, KY - Gov. Andy Beshear and First Lady Britainy Beshear welcomed Grammy Award-winning artist, actress and philanthropist Dolly Parton to the Bluegrass State on Tuesday, August 27, 2024, to celebrate Kentucky's success in getting free books into the hands of children in every county in the commonwealth.

More than 500 local Imagination Library program partners, library staff, literacy advocates and others who helped expand Dolly Parton's Imagination Library across Kentucky gathered at the historic Lyric Theatre in downtown Lexington to hear inspiring words from Dolly and recognize this milestone. Now, all Kentucky children can receive one free book per month, from birth to age 5, ensuring they can build their own at-home library before starting kindergarten.

On the Lyric's stage, the Governor and First Lady sat down with Dolly to learn more about her inspiration for creating the Imagination Library, her advice on encouraging families to participate in the program, who had the greatest influence on her life and what she has planned for the future.

In celebration of Dolly's visit, Gov. Beshear proclaimed August as Dolly Parton's Imagination Library of Kentucky Month in the commonwealth and named Dolly a member of the Honorary Order of Kentucky Colonels.

Before departing the stage, Dolly wrapped up the visit by performing a few of her hit songs, including "Try" and "Coat of Many Colors."
