Breastfeeding Awareness Month: Nurturing Health and Bonding

From Jeff Neagle, Communications Specialist
Lake Cumberland District Health Department

August is a special month dedicated to celebrating and promoting the vital practice of breastfeeding, an important aspect of maternal and infant health. National Breastfeeding Awareness Month shines a spotlight on the benefits of breastfeeding. It provides an opportunity to advocate for support systems that make this natural practice more accessible to all families.

Breastfeeding is often referred to as nature's perfect nutrition. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, exclusive breastfeeding is recommended for the first six months of a baby's life. This means that no other foods or drinks other than a vitamin D supplement are typically given. After the introduction of foods at six months of age, recommendations include continued breastfeeding until at least one to two years of age.

Breast milk provides a unique blend of nutrients, antibodies, and hormones critical for a baby's growth and development. It's not just a source of nourishment but a foundation for a lifetime of health. Studies have shown that breastfed babies have lower risks of infections, respiratory illnesses, and chronic conditions like obesity and type 2 diabetes.

The benefits of breastfeeding extend beyond the infant. For mothers, breastfeeding benefits include faster recovery following delivery, weight loss, and decreased risk of postpartum depression.

ACHS Football win statistics were impressive

By Trey Stephens, staff writer

Friday night Adair County High School Football defeated the Lakers of Russell County 22-16. This was the first game of the regular season for both teams thus a lot of unpolished play.

Both were heavily penalized, which at different points derailed drives, called back scores, and kept the defense on the field when they should have come off.

The Indians found themselves under the sword of penalty flags, which repeatedly kept this game closer than it otherwise would have been. Despite those challenges, Adair County still fought through and put up some impressive statistics to go along with the win.

Local History in Small Doses

By Mike Watson

Here are some local interest history items from the corner of my desk:

The Keith Chapel School, a one room frame building containing eight grades, was destroyed by fire Wednesday, December 30, [1959]. Cause of the blaze was undetermined. It apparently started sometime during the night and was still burning early the following morning. There was no insurance on the building. Since this is one of the grade schools that will be replaced by the grade centers to be constructed in the future, the building will not be replaced. The pupils, there are eleven of them enrolled, are being transported by bus to various other schools near them. The only heat in the school was a wood burning stove. [The Keith Chapel students would eventually be part of the Sparksville Grade Center--MCW]

New IGA Store Opens in Kroger's Location--Mr. J.D. Harper, former owner and manager of Harper's Drive-In Market on Campbellsville Street, is now the owner-manager of the new IGA Store, located in the building formerly occupied by Kroger. His grand opening, which will be on Thursday [7 January 1960]...
